walking around frankfurt
some of my first glimpses of europe. the architecture is really beautiful. so right now i'm at my cousin's apartment in frankfurt. the past few days have been pretty crazy.
first off, the flight went pretty smoothly, save for some of the roughest turbulence ever. the food was actually better than most i've had- i got yummy indian food, yay. the stewardess kept offering me drinks, but it wasn't as though getting drunk on a plane was my idea of fun.
got to frankfurt, met my cousin, and hung out with a few of her friends before going out to a bar with jade, her boyfriend toby, and his best friend. they each insisted i try some german beer, so i had some wheat beer, banana beer, and this thing called a rattla. a lot less shitty than american beer, but i still hate beer. we got home at about 2, and then jade and toby went out to another club until about four.
next day, i took a walk around the town for myself for a bit. i ordered ritter sport chocolate by myself from a german vendor and took a few pictures. the area is really nice- quite european. the cars are all parked on the sidewalk here,
magic lanterns
oh, i am such a film nerd. and a lot of the streets are cobblestone and named something like ----strauße.
after a while, jade, her friend katrina and i went to the german film museum, which was basically an orgasm in itself. the museum was filled with old artifacts, mostly early cinema projectors, kinetoscopes, cinematographes, magic lanterns, zoetroepes, and things like that. all the displays were in german, but it was a good thing i took that silent cinema course because i knew what most of the things were anyway. the best things were probably the lifesize model of HEL, the robot from "metropolis," and the set design in german expressionism. i got really, really film nerdy when i saw these, so pictures will come later.
so after that, we went out to dinner at a place called the central park, where again, people kept offering me drinks. we met up with jade's friends there, and it's pretty crazy because my cousin runs with a very hip, young, relatively successful group- i mean really glamorous stuff. they all kept talking about taking trips to ibiza, cannes, paris, like it was no big deal. i guess that's how things are in europe, but i mean when

you cannot understand how excited i was to see this. you're used to hanging out with poorass college kids all the time, sitting among designer-clad twentysomethings sipping at cocktails and telling all these glamorous stories about the musicians, directors, and artists they know can kind of make you feel like you just haven't really lived. but more of that later.
jade had heard about an art exhibit somewhere with a tsunami benefit theme, so off we went to a club where this exhibit took place. we checked out the gallery, where more of those hip, artsy-fartsy types sat around drinking wine, smoking pot, listening to electrojazz and mingling. it was really a trip. very glamorous and whatnot. i was there with jade, katrina, and this other friend of hers, galia, who is this beautiful artist from canada with russian parents. she does funky new media art design, loves robots, and speaks german, english, russian, hebrew, and french. jesus. katrina just moved to heidelburg after finishing up her masters degree. she's teaching english here right now, and has an adorable dog that keeps running at me and begging for food as we speak. did i mention dogs are allowed virtually everywhere? jade's dog JJ is the coolest thing, even though
metro
of all the subways i have been in, frankfurt has been the nicest looking. he keeps waking me up in the morning with his cold sniffly nose.
whoa, okay, digression. back to the art show. the guy who was running it was tripping acid or something ridiculous- totally gone. my cousin and her friends sat there drinking prosecco for a while, then we jeeted out once they started playing destiny's child. we went to the club next door, had a few more cocktails while katrina did a couple jägerbombs, then left because the vibe of the club was way too weird- old art snobs on the dance floor trying to be hip with the younger kids who were there.
so we went to this club called cocoon, where someone relatively famous was spinning. there was a cover charge that seemed exhorbitantly expensive, but thanks to galia's hookups we all got in for free. the vibe at this club was insane. i don't think i'll ever be able to find something like this back in the states. cameras were strictly forbidden for two reasons, as jade explained: there were lots of celebrities that came into this club, and the art design of the club was so unique the owners did not want anyone to steal it. the place was insane- the music was so loud, i got dizzy. the people there were so glamorous and hip, and here i was, some kid in an sweater and converse. we had a lot of fun though, dancing and evading crazy drunk guys who kept trying to talk to us. i didn't realize that it was nearly four by the time we left, and the place was still extremely crowded and crazy.
so here i am, eating more ritter sport and some breakfast. we're leaving for heidelburg in a few minutes to see a castle there and the more traditional side of germany. the day after that, jade and i are taking the train to zurich, switzerland, where we have hotel reservations. my mom lived there for two years and insisted that i go, and i'm pretty excited. after that, it's off to paris for a few days. then.. who knows?
