Actually, its Fussen in the snow
Here's installment #2 of my latest vacation!

Monday March 17, we took a train from Salzburg to Füssen, Germany. We got to the little town of Füssen. It was raining. We found the tourist information office to find a place to stay. There was a youth hostel, but check-in time was not until five. We had about four hours to do nothing in the rain. Since we were in Budapest, I had wanted to buy some cool European boots. Finally, I did just that. It is a good thing I did too, because it started snowing soon after. When it was time, we went to get rooms. After settling in, we went to a Chinese restaurant. Ordering Chinese food in German is quite difficult. When we got back to the hostel (which by the way, was filled with dozens of children under the age of ten) we had a new roommate. Her name was Rebecca, she is German but she lived in Zimbabwe until she was six, thus she spoke English very well. We had some nice talks. Funny story: We were sitting around talking; while all the kiddies were playing hide-and-go seek with walkie-talkies. All of a sudden, our

doorknob starts turning. We are all staring at it wondering what in the world is going on. The door opens and the cutest little 6-year-old walks in, slowly closes the door while watching the hallway. He turns around and sees us staring at him, says “oops” and walks out the door. We were cracking up for about 15 minutes. It was great.

Tuesday March 18, we went to the little village of Hohenschwangau. Its claim to fame is the castle with the same name, annnnnnnd…..NEUSCHWANSTEIN. This castle was Walt Disney’s inspiration for Cinderella’s castle. So, obviously a perfect destination for me, right? It was cold and snowy…kind of cool, but kind of not cool. Germany reminded me so much of Michigan, it was a bit sad. Green fields, pine trees, hills everywhere, and lake effect snow! We bought the combination ticket so we could see BOTH castles. The one with an H was a smaller summer hunting lodge, but still pretty cool. We couldn’t take pictures inside, but the décor was amazing. All 19th century romantic style…my favorite. Neuschwanstein was definitely the best. As I said before, it was the inspiration for Cinderella’s castle. It reminded me of it

a lot. I felt just like a princess touring the inside. It was HUGE. There were supposed to be 65 rooms, but only 16 were finished. King Ludwig II decorated it in a Turkish/Byzantine style. It was cool. The reason it was never finished is because Ludwig died before it was finished and his family didn’t continue the construction because there was no more money. His death is a bit sketchy. One day, he was declared mentally incompetent…this was grounds for removal from the throne. The next day, his royal doctor was murdered, they do not know how. A few days later, Ludwig was found floating in a lake. Sounds like someone wanted him off the throne…But it was really cool. Apparently there are copyrights on the insides of the castles. Our tour guide told us we could take pictures of the landscape from inside the castle because “there are no copyrights on the land.” I want to know who holds those copyrights…strange. Once we got out of the castle, it was sunny, so I retook all the pictures I had taken earlier. When we got back to Füssen, we wandered around some more because it was sunny and we

had nothing better to do with our lives. It really is amazing how much difference the sun makes on our mood and our impression of things. Füssen was much better this day.

Wednesday March 19, we left Füssen for Munich!!!! And that is where I will end this travelblog because I had way too much spaghetti for lunch, drove through the mountains for about 5 hours, and just ate veal…I just want to lay in bed forever. I’ll try to get Munich up soon!
