Farewell to Roy
A parting photo with Roy Frost. With many thanks to Roy and Gary we had little chance of getting lost as they kindly dropped us off at Epping station about midday yesterday, all we had to do then was catch 1 tube to Liverpool Street and then another one to Kings Cross and then a short walk to St Pancras. This we managed to do easily and without getting lost 😊
After a quick bite to eat and look around at the impressive San Pancras train station, we hopped on the Eurostar at 3:00pm, and travelled through to Paris Gare du Nord train station, where we found it raining lightly and just as many people as the centre of London. After thinking we had plenty of time to walk to Gare de L'est train station, we soon realised we had to adjust our watches foward by 1 hour, that then gave us a little over 1 hour, which still should have been plenty of time, except for the fact of getting lost. Gare de l'est train station was so close one would think finding it should be a very simple process. However after a young frenchman who could barely speak a word of English and obviously
John getting comfortable for the train trip.
After Roy and Gary dropped us at Epping Station, for the first leg of our train trip to Germany, John was trying to make us believe he was sleeping even before the train had left Epping. misunderstood our question, sent us on the scenic route to the train station and we eventually found it with about 20 minutes to spare.....
The next challenge was which gate, which carriage and which room on the carriage? Given time and asking a few more people we eventually had this sorted too.
We had booked a 6 birth couchette for the 5 of us about 2 months ago and had been told because we were a family they they would not put anyone else in the room, excellent we thought!....But wrong!
We did share the couchette with a very nice lady (Nicole) in her early 70's, from Fance who spoke good English, and was very fond of the children. Well maybe just a little fond of them......as she did not offer to take any of them when we departed at Munich.
The night train was a great experience, but not something one would want to do every week. When the train arrived at Munich at about 7:00am this morning I think everyone was glad to put their feet on the firm ground and have a decent stretch.
After a little breakfast and locking our suitcases
We've got this far
Posing for a photo outside San Pancras train station in the lockers at the train station. It was time to find
Ocktoberfest. This was the easiest task of the last 24 hours, (and no chance of getting lost!) it was as simple as following the big flourescent signs as well as a few hundred other people....
Once at the venue we were all amazed at its size, not only huge tents as we had expected but also huge rides, rollercoastrers and stalls.
We found a tent, we then settled in with a beer and a nice big pretzel (thanks to John who would only let us purchase pretzels from the pretzel girls he thought prettiest!) and of course lemonades for the kids.
Sadly, but rather fortunately all good things must come to end and after a couple of hours it was time to head back to the Munich train station and then find another train which would take us to ouraccommodation at Ulm, an hour from Munich and a lot less crowded
Cheers (Prost)
