Eze's passage ways
Hidden passage ways and maze of streets around Eze. After a quieter day yesterday we started early as planned to tackle 4 of the Riviera towns on our last day here. We started with the bus to Eze, this is a village perched up high on the cliffs of the Riviera and highly recommended. Unfortunately it is hugely popular with tourists, we did it late morning and hit a huge school group so would recommend earlier.
After about 30 mins we arrived and there are some amazing views to be had. The village itself has many alleyways and hidden passages up and around the viewpoints. It can be difficult to find a quiet spot though but worth it. Once done instead of continuing with the bus we took the track that goes all the way down, bit of a hike and takes about 45 mins. By doing this we avoided all the tourists and more great views also coming down!. The color of the water is an amazing azure colour (hence the name of the coast I guess). This takes you down to the beach and if you have time you can visit the Peninsular (which we decided against).
From there we took the bus to Menton which
Eze viewpoint
Main Eze viewpoint. is the last stop and only a stones throw from Italy. It is also the warmest town on the Riviera and were told a sandy beach could be found, not quite still many pebbles but was pretty good. The town itself does not hold a lot of interest and would probably say give it a miss, from there we headed back to Monte Carlo.
In Monte Carlo we made it to the casino this time except I was wearing shorts, quick change though and we were in. The private rooms require tie and jacket for reference!. Found the best thing about the casino was finding a spot outside and watching all the rich people driving in their cars, there are also many parked outside the casino. We saw plenty of Ferrari's and Porsche's.
Unfortunately never made it to Villa French Village which was to be our last stop, this is meant to be a pretty fishing village, may be worth checking out or be interested to hear if anyone has been?
Day 5 - Lyon
Another incredibly early start, we had pre-booked a train from Nice - Lyon but with the train strike was not confident
Eze coming down
Coming down on walking track, awesome views and color of the water. we would make it. Had loads of trouble at the station and never managed to pick up the ticket from the machine. (queues were horrendous!) We took the chance and we got on anyway. We had a printed confirmation and never got asked so bit of a relief!. Also ended up in 1st class by mistake and have to say the train was excellent, very comfortable and about 4 hours to Lyon. Bit strange there were no train attendants or conductors on the train, perhaps this was to do with the strike.
Arrived in Lyon, Stayed at the Hotel de Bretagne, very basic and pretty awful really. It was falling apart, toilet door busted and rail for curtains fell down in the morning!. Also there is no soap can you believe It, even after asking. So there I was, not only could I not close the door I could not wash hands afterwards either! For a hotel this was pretty poor. Anyway we only had a day to look around the city and the old towns cobbled streets which was nice . French people here seemed to be much better dressed and city much cleaner than Nice. For things
Monte Carlo Casion
And also the cars parked outside. to do would recommend going up to the Basilica of Our Lady on the Hill that overlooks the city. The views are good (though not amazing) but the church itself was well worth the walk. It has some superb stained windows and the Mosiac in the crypt all made from stone was impressive.
