Les Gets
This is the part of the trip I’ve been most looking forward to and it didn’t disappoint. Couldn’t fit my Down Hill bike in the van so we rented them off the nicest Frenchman I’ve ever met, seriously, if you’re ever in Les Gets and need anything bike or surf, visit Nevada Sports. Hats off to you Thiery, you are a true gentleman and a general lovely guy. Spent the first night camped in some car park on the side of the valley before we got a camp site the next night.
The riding was sick, absolutely sick, I’m so proud of Anne for following me all the way, she did really well and it’s not like we were just pussying out and doing all the green runs. Anne followed me through red runs, rock sections, root sections and some flat out fire roads so big respect to her for that.
(I now know the true meaning of holding on for dear life!! I also did some northshore and a skinny bridge!!).
It rained during the night and most of the morning and we were so gutted. We were just gonna pack up and leave cause there’s no
way you can ride in the wet down those trails but something stopped us. We had paid for a 3 day lift pass so we thought we’d better use it. We got in the van and headed for Avoriaz which was the highest bit you could drive to. The place looked like a building site with cranes everywhere and the main town bit looked a bit shanty like. We parked up and got our backpacks on and headed up the hill to the chair lift. We had asked directions to the Sky Wire and had to go down then up to Chatel. When we got there the weather had perked up a bit and we found the sky wire which was called Fantasticable!! There was no one about and because of the crap weather in the morning we thought it was shut 😞 . Just in case we asked in the chairlift hut and before you know it we were weighed and were walking down with the suit on to the rig!
Words cannot describe how nuts this shit is. Check it on on uTube and you’ll get the idea! There are some pics but its not us, we started
a trend and so we were able to get some pics of others to show what it was like.
We then topped off the day with a nice kayak around Lake Montriond. We could see it from the top of the mountain at Avoriaz and asked a guy how to get to that lake just over there and he said "No, not just over there!". It was about a half hour drive down some windy roads through a tiny village where goats were roaming the streets being fed by tourists.
When we got back to the campsite we set up the BBQ and tried to light it in the drizzle and cooked up some random French meat which we thought were burgers but blatentley not!
The next day was better weather so we rented bikes again for the day and set off for a packed day. We started with a Les Gets run then headed over to Morzine to go across the top of the mountain. On route we stopped for a drink and found wild blueberries just growing so we had a little feast!
We then pushed up a few KM to Avoriaz (a killer with 40 odd
lb DH bikes) and managed to find a Red run down which was so rocky! Jody found a Northshore drop off and I managed to get a crap picture of him sending it!
We had just enough time to fly all the way down the Avoriaz road and catch the lifts back up to Les Gets, down another bit of downhill and then back to the campsite for a quick hose down to get the bikes back.
That night we thought we'd treat ourselves to a steak and frites but we traipsed round Morzine then back to Les Gets and couldn't find anything. We ended up getting robbed for two steak meals in a place where the service was shit and we didn't eat til nearly half 9. No tip for them!
Overall a great stay in the Alps and would have been longer if not for the shit weather and expensive bikes!
