Provence
Typical Scene The second break of the year took us to France to celebrate Lisa and Peter's wedding in Provence.
We flew on Friday morning from a sunny Stanstead with the exceptional Ryan Air to Marseille and surprisingly arrived in glorious sunshine - it wasn't to last.
Hiring a car along with Betty we drove to Lorgues along typically dangerous French Auto Routes and once off the main road through picturesque villages surrounded by vineyards to our hotel in Lorgues.
Parking outside we were a bit dubious as to what Sally had booked - it looked like a typical French town house in a back street. However, once inside we were amazed at how nice the place was. There were only 5 rooms and all had been booked by the wedding party. We were to share it with some crazy Norwegians for the weekend. Our host served us chilled Rose from in the garden whilst we waited for the evening to kick off in a local bar in town.
Everyone met later on in the local cafe where beer and wine flowed as if on tap and gave the locals something to talk about in sleepy Lorgues! The highlight
of the evening was taking over a restuarant just shy of closing time and ordering about 15 Steak and Chips! Just as well we called it a night earlyish as the next day promised to be a marathon with the wedding venue a Chateau famous for its wine.
We had some time in the morning and visited Cotignac - a beautiful village full of French charm - fountains, cafes and also a few caves that the locals only vacated recently. We bumped into Pete and Sarah and had to wait for Sally and Sarah to buy shoes before taking a stroll and having an omlette each for lunch to line our stomachs for the afternoons events.
A quick shower and change into wedding attire revealed an instant faux pas on my part! Make sure you try the suit on before going abroad! My linen tailor made linen suit from India was a bit on the tight side much to everyones amusement! I used to be thin honest! Thankfully it didn't restrict any consumption of food and wine and even more importantly did not hinder my dancing efforts!
The ceremony was in an old part of Chateau de
Berne in a beautiful chapel within the grounds and conducted by a friend of Lisa's family. Following this we drank wine from the vineyard and ate the most delicous canapes prior to supper. Fois Gras fried in honey with Rasberrys was great - the smoked duck and tuna even better - and the main course was still to follow - Steak! Unfortunately I seem to have looked at the puddings on offer and decided I would have some later on - only to completely forget - I certainly missed out.
The rest of the evening was spent making a fool of myself on the dance floor (as usual) but trying hard! The trousers stood the test of time so the Indian tailoring wasn't too bad after all.
Sunday was the perfect day - in that it rained so we were hotel bound. No matter as we had the run of the place - we ordered take away pizzas and a case of Rose from the Chateau and spent the afternoon lazing in front of the Grand Prix and recovering from the previous evening.
The last meal was Italien and an early night beckoned before the traditional panic
to get back to the airport in the hire car. Against all odds we arrived as the plane was boarding and the only delay was typically back in the UK trying to get through immigration!
A great weekend with great company in a beautiful part of France! Thanks Peter and Lisa for a brilliant weekend.
