Rising early it was off to Avignon to visit the Pont Du Saint Benezet and the Popes Palace and I did not even know the popes had a residence in Avignon back in 1200 but there you have it, they did and ran the Roman Catholic Church from there for around 200 years. It was a stunning place to visit and the centre of Avignon is a walled city to protect it from the Rhône River when it floods, which if you look at history is quite often. The bridge, or what remains of the bridge is very cool and again dates back to the 12th century and if the legend is correct is was a bloke called Benezet, a poor farmer from the hills that thought god had spoken to him and told him to ... read more

After another trip to the boulangerie for some croissants and a baguette we headed out for the day with our first stop being Gordes. Gordes is a typical Provençal hilltop village in a region known as The Luberon. This area is very pretty, full of lavender fields and was made famous by the book “A Year in Provence” - and it seemed that the whole of France, most of Japan and half of America had also decided it would make a nice place to start the day too! We hadn't researched properly and had decided on market day for our visit. Now markets are nice to look around, and this one was very pretty with soaps, olives and lavender aplenty (plus some of those annoying carved frogs that chirp and are beloved of market traders the ... read more

Our friends in Lyon told us about this little town in the hills that was still preserved with the original 1500s architecture. It was a bit off the beaten track, but we decided to book the local Best Western and drive the three hours. By the time we got off the expressway, we were about 30 dollars lighter in toll money and it was dark. We dilligently followed the signs on country roads, and in about 20 minutes, we were at the cutest Best Western we've ever seen. In Europe the BW chain isn't as low budget as it is in the States. We checked in, and drove the 4KM up to the village of Gordes for dinner. The village appears, lit up on a hill, out of the darkness of the French countryside. We followed ... read more

Gordes - Incroyable! Europe » France » Provence Alpes Cote d Azur » Gordes By kamaaole kama heleJuly 23rd 2007Matthew and ErinGORDES - INCROYABLE! Not much to say besides, "Go here before you die." This was the first stop on our Vaucluse Village Road Trip. We rented a sweet Opel Hatchback from Brian's 'amis' Seb at Hertz (pronounced 'air-tz') and spent a day and a half travelling. We'll post several blogs with pictures. Hope everyone is well. Write if you get the chance with updates. We'd love to hear from you.... read more

I took a "shower" so as not to flood the place again, and after breakfast we went to see the Village des Bories, which is an outdoor museum of ruins of a variety of stone buildings from the 12th century that were built without mortar or cement of any kind. The stones just stay together based on how they are pieced together and gravity. Next we made a rather short stop in the village of Gordes to see the markets there and get some shots of the village, which is perched nicely upon the hills. We got the best "postcard" pictures of the shoot (in France) there. Gordes is a very lovely village, but contrasts greatly to Goult, where we're staying. Gordes sees thousands of tourists a day, while Goult sees a few hundred. Gordes is ... read more

Today the weather was fabulous. We woke up early because we wanted to head off to the Musee Du Desert, which is in another small town near Anduze called Gorde. The Musee Du Desert is up in the mountains, and is an original house where the Huguenots first congregated. The Huguenots make up the majority of the French people in this region. Back in the early 1500's, I think, Louis XIV declared that the only religion to be practiced in France was Catholicism. Actually, i'm not sure of the time frame, so dont quote me on that! Well, a great majority of people wanted to follow the lead of Martin Luther, who famously declared that the Catholic Church could not dictate the way people lived their lives outside of their time of worship. These people in ... read more
