It’s 8 am and I rollover for the first time, it’s pitch black and really, I don’t even know that it’s 8 am.
I gently get out of bed so not to disturb Kirsten, I hear Kirsten say...not so fast there Mr. Stealthy. Woh, are you awake? Yep, we are leaving by 10 AM, you’d better be showered, fed, packed and loaded in the car or I’m leaving you like a bad habit.
I’m thinking that sounds pretty strong coming from someone who doesn’t know where the car keys are........
I’m showered and down stairs having breakfast with Uli & Gudrun when Kirsten and Omi show up. No sooner than they sit down..... Claudia’s husband Tommy comes in. He just flew in from NYC and wanted to visit us before we left. We sat there for another hour talking, well they all talked I just listened and nodded every now and then.
I finish breakfast and load our suitcases into the car while they started saying their goodbyes.
We all climbed in the car and Kirsten is searching everywhere looking for the keys. I gently hold them up and say you’re not going anywhere without me
baby.
She smiles and says you got that right.
I load the address into our Navi and off we go, if there ever was European Beverly Hillbillies it was us going down the road toward Nantes France.
Now I’m sorry to say it gets real boring. We’re on the Autobahn traveling 140 KMH and staring out the window. Now if you’ve ever rode with Kirsten and I on a long ride, we don’t say much. In fact, we are very quiet. Well Omi isn’t, she is in the back seat trying to engage us into a conversation and we answer with one syllable answers. Yes, No, Maybe - ok I know that 2 syllables. After an hour or so we stop for gas and snack, Omi gets her turn riding in the front seat next to Kirsten.
I have planned for us to stop for the night in the city of Amiens. It’s about half way to Nantes and it also has the largest cathedral in France.
Kirsten is back on the highway and I discuss my plans with her and she agrees. I then whip out my phone and launch my nifty Ibis Budget
Hotel app and reserve us a room for 3. I get my conformation email. Guess how much? $75 bucks, no way Kirsten says from the front seat while laughing saying you are just telling me that.
After the next bathroom break, I take over driving. OK.... let’s see what this Opel can do. I run through all six gears and settle in around 160 KMH. Pretty smooth, we are in Amiens an hour and a half later.
Our Navi takes us to the front door of our Ibis Hotel which happens to be so new that the paint isn’t even dry. It’s less than a 15-minute walk to the cathedral and after loading our luggage into the room we’re walking toward the largest cathedral in France.
Amiens is about the size of Tampa, it has a good size university and it’s located right by the cathedral and our hotel. Lots of new housing going up and young students everywhere.
We find a restaurant next to the cathedral and enjoy pizza & wine. We then sit in front of the cathedral and watch the light show on the face of the cathedral.
It’s midnight before we
are in bed and Omi is ready, long day today and tomorrow will be the same.
Yes, the room was only $75 and Kirsten was truly impressed.
Bonne Nuit
