Disclaimer: I am typing this in an internet cafe in Montpellier on a french keyboard so I have to type slow thus a fairly weak blog which will be riddled with spelling errors.
Bonjour. Had a fairly decent train ride up to Montpellier. Rode along the coast for a while on the way up so those were some pretty fantastic views. Was greeted at the station by Alice, a nice British girl who is friends with my host Anil and another CSer. Went back to her place so I could put my pack down so I could roam around town until Anil got off work. Showed me a bit around before she had to head off to take care of work. Spent a little bit of time roaming around before stopping for lunch. The food here is soooo much cheaper than Barcelona. Got a hamburger sub with fries and a drink for 4 euro. Score. They call the meal there formule americaine haha. It was exactly what I needed after all those little tapas meals. Ducked into another British pub to watch the Spain match. Got talking to the bar keep about what beers they had to offer and I
think he felt bad about the selection I experienced the last 3 weeks in Portugal and Spain so he just let me try some of everything they had and I ended up with a really nice dark Belgian beer which was fantastic after countless light lagers in Iberia. Met up with Anil around 6pm and headed back to his place. Just a real nice guy who speaks perfect English as he has an American stepdad. He is actually a Namibian (sp?) as that is where his real dad is from and where he was born. Really nice guy and we got along great immediately as he cooked us a nice dinner. We got into a conversation about the Peculier Pub (huge beer selection) in Manhattan which we both love. Then he tells me there is a similar place in Montpellier so we headed over there to hang out with some CSers that he is friends with. It's really cool how the CouchSurfers here really are a community and get together to do bike trips, hit the bars together, etc. This place was a little out of town and somewhere I never would have gone to without couchsurfing. It is run
ms
main square by this little old French guy and probably has about 200 types of beer. You just bring a warm one from the self up to the counter and he goes and gets you a cold one and switches yours in replacement. Enjoyed a handful of really good beers from all over with Anil and the rest of the crew out on the sidewalk where everyone sits here. Gets pretty crowded at night. Just an awesome spot. Montpellier is just a beautiful and fun city with a ton to do no matter what the guide books tell you. Very glad I came here and will tell more next blog on a real freaking keyboard.
