Well, today is my last day in France. We made it a good one 😊 We got up fairly early and went out to the Musée d'Orsay which is our favourite museum in Paris. We walked around the museum for a couple of hours and then headed out for a bit to eat before jumping on the Metro to go up to the Montmartre area and Sacré Coeur Basilica. The museum is a fine collection of most of the grand master impressionist artists as well as many others. You could spend days in there. I took so many pictures! LOL Our lunch was pretty basic. Ken had an omelette and I had roast chicken and fries (my first fries of the entire trip!) We hopped back on the Metro and road it to the Abesses stop where we had to walk up 172(!!!) stairs just to get to the street! OMG! There is a reason I avoid StairMasters! Once we reached the street I had to stop and catch my breath. As we were sitting in the park we noticed a very cool church just across the street which we checked out when we were able to walk again! It was
so different but very beautiful. It was one of the first churches where they didn't have candles for sale for a Euro or two. After we left the church we walked over to the funicular that took us up the "mont" to the top of Montmartre and Sacré Coeur. Boy, was it crowded! It's a gorgeous church and the only one I was in this entire trip that didn't allow photos. All people we allowed to do in this church was walk around the outside aisles from entrance to exit....like a herd of cattle. For all its beauty it was a bit of a disappointment that way. After we checked that out, we walked around the Pigalle area. This are is famous for its bohemian lifestyle in the early 20th century. Many great authors and artists spent their time in this area in those days...notably Hemingway and his cronies. There is a cool art marker there and we almost made it all the way around without buying anything but the second last artist had a painting that caught Ken's eye and, subsequently, mine and we had to buy it. For those who can come by our house in Calgary to
see it, you are invited 😊 To those who can't, I'll post a photo once it's hung in the house. We walked around a fair bit before getting back on the Metro and coming back to the hotel for a sieste before dinner. At about 8 we went out for dinner and found a Raclette place. Raclette is a type of cheese that you get as a chunk and there is an electric element that melts it for you to scrap off and eat with boiled potatoes and jambon. Delicious! We're back at the hotel now, all packed and ready to be on the Roissy-Charles deGaulle bus at 8 am. See you again when I am back in Calgary!
