Rainbow over the Boulevard Saint Germain
While walking to meet Gregg it started raining on me...but this rainbow was the result, so I didn't mind. I've always loved them...and it was a good omen for the rest of the evening! It is great to be back here in awesome Paris after my travels...I'm ready to stay put for a while! (Well, at least until my Mom comes at the end of the month and we go to Bretagne together). Classes started up this past week, and they all seem pretty good...with really light work-loads! Yay. So I'm taking advantage of the slow start to go out and enjoy "la vie à la parisienne" (take advantage of the Parisian lifestyle). Tonight I had so much fun I just have to blog about it...it was pretty much the perfect day, I have to say.
I just came in from our rooftop terasse, where I was watching the moon emerge from a full lunar eclipse that peaked here in Europe at exactly midnight. Props to the awesome kids of the GU Astronomy Club for alerting me about it- I love you guys! The sky cleared of clouds just as it began to emerge, around 1:00 am, and by 1:45 it was almost fully out and I got to enjoy the beautiful sight of a full moon while sipping a giant mug of decaf coffee and munching on a late-night-snack apple. Basically the best
Me and Dorothy at Le Saint
Sciences Po BDE soiree on Thursday night at a club in the Quartier Latin. way I can imagine to unwind after a fun-filled evening.
Going backwards in time, I'll summarize the first half of my day: relaxing. I woke up at 11, went for a jog along the banks of the Seine (in the sunshine), came home, ate lunch, and basically read newspapers and my book all afternoon while listening to music on the couch. I left the appartment at 5pm to walk across the city to Odeon to meet my friend Gregg (from Georgetown) and his mother Wanda, who just arrived in Paris this morning. They are here for Spring Break (like all the other Americans I noticed while jogging today!!!) and are spending the weekend in Paris before going down to the Cote d'Azur. It was wonderful to see him, and meet her, and we took the opportunity to gather all Hoyas in Paris around a Georgetown basketball game being broadcast on the TV. For all of you who know me well, a Hoya game is about the best thing that can happen to me...so I thoroughly enjoyed my evening! Dorothy and Yazi joined us as well, and we found the game on TV at a bar called The Great Canadian...from
The Girls
What would I do without my two best buddies here in Paris? now on a favorite of mine, simply for the sports!!! We met two other 2005 GU alums there as well, who were really nice guys, and we're arranging to start a "Hoyas in Paris" Facebook club to organize game-watching nights at various bars during March Madness. I predict lots of fun times in the coming weeks! BEtter yet, we beat UConn for the first time since 1997 (11-game losing streak snapped) by a score of 59-46...whoo hoo!!! We were all very happy...AND we got to eat a huge plate of nachos while cheering on our boys! This was very exciting too because it was our first plate of nachos in over six months. Withdrawal symptoms had set in...it disappeared rapidly!
At about 8pm the game finished and I got a call from my very good friend Lynsey, who arrived in Paris yesterday for her Spring Break. She will be staying with me this coming week, so I predict lots of fun times...I'm thrilled to see her. I ran over to St. Michel to meet her and 2 other Hoyas with her (all visiting Paris from Florence for Spring Break) and we went back to the bar before deciding to
head to the Latin Quarter (about 5 minutes walk!) to east dinner. So we were 7 Americans for dinner...haven't done THAT in ages!!! It was like critical mass...American-mania! It was funny trying to hear Lynsey, Hunter, and Laura pronounce french words...painful funny, but at least they tried. Hehe.
After a yummy dinner (10 euro special, including an amazing chocolate crepe!!!!) Gregg and Wanda headed back to their hotel, and Dorothy, Lynsey, Hunter, Laura and I decided to go to a bar. After wandering around the Latin Quarter, we ended up at the Frog & Princesse behind Odeon, and...low and behold, as soon as we walk in we met a whole group of Georgetown students doing the CUPA semester program! These were my friend Victoria's "group", and at this point we were probably 12 Americans, with at least 10 Hoyas. Amazing. Haven't felt a GU presence like that in ages! It was fun to explore all the connections between us (everyone knew a friend of everyone else, that sort of thing) but after a while the music, and immature french people in the bar (which was packed and kind of too anglophone) got on my nerves, and we switched to
The Paris Section of "Hoya Blue"
From L-R: Wanda, Gregg, Dorothy, me, Yazi, Raoul, and John. All loyal Hoya fans watching the game at The Great Canadian. the Cafe Six, which is a really good bar just down the road and much more "french". Spent a little while there before heading out around 12:15 am, and we sent Lynsey et co. off to their hotel before taking a stroll across the Seine to Chatelet. Paris was beautiful tonight; the air was warm; and spring is definitely in the air. Dorothy and I can't wait until it gets warm enough to do picnics again...soon now!
So that was my night...actually fairly typical if you have the energy to do it! It was my third night out in a row, so getting home by 1:30 felt pretty nice...and the ecplise was just the perfect way to end the evening. I've once again managed to exhaust myself, however, by staying up writing this unnecessary blog, so I hope you enjoyed reading it...I'll throw in a couple pictures just for fun. Tomorrow I'm going to the Picasso Museum in the Marais with Gregg and Wanda, so I think sleep is a good idea. Hope you enjoyed tonight's little snapshop of Parisian life!
