No mistake in the spelling for the title - that's how we will probably be speaking after getting through our Christmas stash of vino!!
After a quick recommendation from our friends at the camp site in Naverrenx we decided to top up our wine rack, which had been starting to look a little bare from when we used to live in the UK. We had bought a few bottles and even though a lot cheaper than buying wine back home we started to feel that it was going to cost us a few bob to set up for the Christmas period - so off we trundled to the local cave - these are small wine producers, very local and very cheap!
We had bought our 20 litre jerry can, a hand corker and some corks.
We arrived at the first cave in the town just north of here - Salies-de-Béarn - and ventured in to buy our first rack of red. A little old man, walking stick and shouting wife ushered us out the back of the wine shop to his vats - a very large barn fitted with surprisingly up-to date equipment. He took our jerry can perched

careful - don't spill any!on a stool and looking a little like an old fashioned milk maid started to milk the vat for our lovely red wine!
After filling the jerry can it came to paying - €22euros for just over 20 litres!!!! Once bottled we worked out that each bottle cost us just under 75 pence!! Now that's not bad - especially when the wine is actually very good.
We then ventured home to start bottling - wine dripping everywhere as this was our first attempt - however we finally managed to make our wine rack look as though it's being used for what it's meant to be!!
Same story with the second cave - this one is just out side Salies and produces very good rose - needless to say the wine rack is starting to creek!! The only thing we need to do now is find a wine producer down here that sells white on the rack!
