It was redic hot in Riga this morning when I left this morning… I thought I was going to melt into the sidewalk waiting for the bus to show up.
I bussed to Tallinn, Estonia - about a 4hr ride. I couldn’t sleep because the guy beside me decided he needed to take up 1.5 seats… which left me .5 up against the window. Lovely. That being said, the bus had A/C, so I was still a happy clam.
It’s funny seeing how things are done here. We had a 5min stop just past the Estonian border - he clearly said only 5min… 5min later he drives off without even checking if the bus was full..!! As we’re about to pull out of the parking lot you see these two ladies and this guy madly dashing across the lot - yeah, we were totally going to leave without them.
I’ve discovered the one thing I hate about traveling - the first 10-20min you spend in the new city trying to find your hostel. After that, you have your bearings and you’re good to go - it’s just that first trek that’s always a pain in the ass. Like,
even if you don’t get lost you’re still wondering if you have any sweet clue where you’re going.
Anyway, I found my hostel without much problems - it’s in the heart of the Old Town, which is mostly pedestrian streets and quite small, very walkable. It’s absolutely stunning here - very much has the potential to be one of my fav (from a photo and beauty standpoint) cities I’ve ever visited. The Old Town is incredibly well preserved - you really feel as if you’re walking back into medieval times.
The roads can be slightly difficult to maneuver though haha - I made the mistake of wearing my flip flops when I went out to buy groceries. The stones are so uneven, I nearly tripped about 5x in the 10min walk.
Speaking of groceries, I love the prices here. I bought 4-5 days worth of food for just over $10. Pretty sweet deal. I also got a can of the local beer (Saku) for about 60 cents - tasted great! Yep, I could get used to this for the next few days. (The cheap prices… not consuming copious amounts of beer haha… although I will have to
try the other local brews, you know, while I’m here.)
Anyway. I grabbed a quick supper at “Potato Planet” - haha, I love different names. It’s like, Estonian fast food haha, but better than normal fast food. You get what the name suggests - a giant baked potato! You also get melted cheese (yum) and three toppings of your choice. They didn’t have that many options, so my choices aren’t all that exciting… mushrooms, peas and ham. It was really good!!
I was going to go on a day-trip to Helsinki tomorrow, but apparently that’s not in the cards for this trip… I’m apparently 15 days too young, pfft. Really, why have 21 as the min. age to take the cruise boat when the drinking age is only 18?
Whatever, there’s no shortage of things to do here in town. There is also potentially a tour going out from the hostel, so I’ll do that if it runs. Otherwise, the same company from Riga does free tours here in Tallinn as well - so that’s a must while I’m here.
