Some local sightseeing in Beroun
After a full day yesterday in Prague we have decided today to stay in Beroun and do some local sightseeing as well as catching up on some washing, banking etc and head back to Prague tomorrow for a walking tour of the sights we still want to see.
After a lazy breakfast and sorting out some paperwork we took a walk up the hill behind the town to see three bears that used to feature in a childrens TV series made in the republic that are now housed in an enclosure as they can’t be returned to the wild.
It was a short and steep climb but we were rewarded when we got there as one of the bears was outside although he wasn’t active and we had to be content with him lazing about resting his chin on a log.
On the way back to the hotel we called into the supermarket for items to put our lunch together and also a salad with ham for dinner in tonight. The cost of food and particulary alcohol is really cheap compared to Germany making our days here a bargain. When compared to what we paid for
food and drink and for that matter diesel and accommodation in the UK this country is about one third of the cost.True the standard of living and therefore local wages would be much lower than the UK but now is certainly the right time to be travelling here before the country catches up with the rest of Europe as will happen at some stage especially if they want to enter the Euro currency zone.
We spent a good part of the afternoon editing and naming photos and tidying up paper work as well as making forward hotel bookings for the next two or three places we intend to visit.
As the heat went out of the day late in the afternoon we took a stroll along the main street and discovered a Kaufland supermarket(the same chain as the monster supermarket near our hotel in Berlin)and took note of the cheap price of the local beers including Staropramen at Kc12 a 500ml bottle, that is €0.50 or NZ$1 a bottle!!!The beer was actually cheaper than much of the mineral water and half the price of a same sized bottle of CocaCola!!!What is the world coming to!!It was little wonder that almost every person we noticed in the supermarket had a trolley full of beer!!!We will be back on the day we leave to fill the car up with beer to use up the last of our Korunas.
We had dinner in for a change and Gretchen arranged a very tasty salad with ham and rolls plus the inevitable bottle or two of beer. After which we settled back to listen to ZB Talkback through the laptop as we are getting a bit tired of the two English channels on TV(CNN and BB)where all they do is repeat news that we have little or no interest in.Leighton Smith was on and talking about the proposed changes to various driving rules in NZ as well as the legal alcohol limit in comparison to Europe. With a beer and a couple of wines downed Gretchen thought it appropriate to participate in the talkback via email.Leighton likes hearing from people overseas with their views and lo and behold he read our email out and commented on it 10 minutes after we had sent it.What a small world it all is!!
