We had a good day yesterday in Dubrovnik. We caught a boat from Srebreno and were ferried across to Mlina where we were moved onto a bigger boat. Most people there were going on a trip round three islands off the mainland coast. A few of us were going to Dubrovnik. One couple nearly missed the first stage. They had been sitting near the boat and as we left the quay they shouted and we had to return to pick them up! Another couple were going on a trip and it turned out they were at the wrong stop. So our boat relayed the message and they were picked up later. The man had his hair in two bunches and I remarked on this. Simon said it was the same style as his girlfriend's!
We met a nice British couple on board. They were staying at a nice hotel further round the coast and were rather startled to hear of our holiday and thought we were very brave (I suspect they thought mad!) but wished us luck in Dubrovnik which they had been to before. As we approached Dubrovnik it was spectacular and much more imposing than I had expected.
We started off with a walk round the walls which was further than we expected. We were lucky that it was a bit overcast which suppressed the heat. There were clouds over the mountains and the cable car up the mountain was stopped for awhile. We didn't bother with that as had driven along the road the day before just below the viewpoint. It was quite spectacular walking the walls. We could see the old city in the middle with lovely views over the sea. We climbed steps and went up and down and all the way round until we were exhausted, especially as the clouds dispersed and we were in the full sun. When we had completed the circuit we found somewhere shady and cool for lunch. Later we walked a little in the centre down little alleyways and went into one church. We then decided we had had enough and caught the boat back to Srebreno. On the way we called at one of the islands near Dubrovnik where there were loads of people queueing to get off but none wanted Srebreno so we carried on our way past luxury yachts moored just off the coast.
When
Looking over the roofs
Contrast of the old roves and the new, apparently all the new roofs are on buildings damaged during the war we got back to the site we had a cup of tea and then went back down to the sea for a lovely cool swim. On the way back we called into a shopping centre which was air conditioned, it felt absolute bliss, for some essentials. When we came out it felt like we had hit a hot wall.
During the night we had another thunderstorm but this time we had brought everything in. In the morning it was quite dull and we had more rain before we left. We have now gone as far south as we intend so are now slowly starting to make our way north back up through Croatia. We headed back to Neum. This time we had to show our passports at the first border into Bosnia but were waved through by police and customs as we re entered Croatia. I would not advocate not having insurance but was astonished that all the reports I had read were greatly exaggerated. We complied with the law and were only covered third party through Bosnia. We have since found out what we should have done to be completely covered ourselves before we went but it is
too late now. It was an expensive way we chose which need not have been if we had been advised properly in the first place.
The other thing is it was not a motorway we drove on and it was not 22km as we had read it would be, it was more like 11km on an ordinary road. But hindsight is a wonderful thing!
We stopped for lunch at a vineyard, Rizman wines just after the Neum crossing after another rainstorm. Apparently the Bosnians ruined the Croatian vines during the war and the vineyards are now just recovering from the devestation. We saw lots of vines growing on very steep hills. I then took over the driving.
We are now at a campsite on the Dalmation coast in a little place called Zeostag. The sea is just across the road and we can see it from our pitch. We have had a swim which cooled us down and stopped the itching of the mosquito bites we have collected! We hope to stay here for a few days relaxation. Hope the blog makes sense, a lot of red wine has been consumed! We are camping next to a
family from Czechoslavakia. They are very friendly though neither of us can understand each other. The young son has been helping us get set up and is very sweet. We have done lots of sign language and thumbs up! Just in case we forget the time we have a church clock nearby which chimes every quarter of an hour and rings the time on the hour. Presumably this will go on all night but I hope we don't hear it.
