Well we did get our swim even though the sun had disappeared behind some clouds and I'm pleased the water shoes worked well and we were able to have a pain free swim. After a cup of tea we wandered back into town. It was much busier this time as the shops were open, restaurants starting to open up and more people about. As we went passed the church a funeral procession came out. Some people were carrying crosses decorated with flowers and they walked off towards the cemetery. Some people were still with the coffin on the church steps. A band of guitarists came up and people were singing but we could hardly hear them for the church bells ringing very loudly. We walked on and found the place was a lot bigger than we had originally thought. We found a fruit and vegetable shop and bought some beans and cherries. We then wandered down to the harbour where it started raining quite heavily and we had to take shelter. When it eased off we thought it would be best to make our way back. We got rather wet but this was made worse by Simon noticing the sun awning
was drooping from being full of water. He let the water off and it landed on me. I was soaked and had to change completely. Through tears of laughter he apologised but not very genuinely I thought!
We managed to eat our meal outside but it got rather damp so we went in the van. When we were in bed the thunder started followed by heavy rain. Lightning flashed and lit up the whole sky and thunder rumbled around most of the night. We had to shut all the windows and vents and Simon brought in the chairs and table. In the morning everything outside was soaked. We tried to stay an extra night to dry out but it was impossible as the site was fully booked for the weekend. so we packed up and left later than we had planned. This meant we had to head for somewhere nearer than originally thought.
We took the coastal road and left in bright sunshine. As we drove it kept clouding up and we had some rain but it did start to improve. We headed for Split and all along the road we saw lovely little bays, and stunning views.
We stopped in Marina above a small beach for lunch and then carried on. As we neared Split it became much more built up. The airport is right by the road and planes came in very low over the road to land. It is backed by mountains so must make for a spectacular view as you come into land.
Passed Split we decided to stop in Omis and found another nice site right on the beach. It is very much more spacious than the previous one. So we decided to stay two nights to make the most of it. Once we had set up we walked down to the beach which looks lovely. After we had eaten we decided to have an early night and hoped for a more peaceful sleep. We were disappointed. There was a wedding party set up on beachside with band playing outside. The couple arrived to lots of car hooting, the likes of which we hadn't seen since being in Egypt. Then the band started up so peace was over. It went on quite late but even when they moved indoors you could still hear it.
Never mind we had a good lie
in this morning. After getting chores done, even needs doing on holiday, we walked out to explore. We found a nice harbour and stopped for a coffee watching the boats. Lots of people were painting their boats ready for the new season of holiday makers. We then wandered about and came back along the beach side.
After lunch we decided to try the nature reserve our German neighbours here had told us about. We drove through the town and out through three tunnels to get through the mountains at the back of the town. It was a completely different world the other side. We drove up through a gorge as far as we could go and parked up. We walked down a slope and followed the path to the river Cetina. People were canoeing passed us although it looked like a strong current. We hadn't gone far before we heard thunder and it started to rain hard. So we walked back to the car and had another soaking. As we drove back the road was like a river and in town it was full of huge puddles. When we got back to the van the chairs and table were
soaked. Good thing I had brought in the washing before we left. Inside we had left the roof windows up and we had a puddle on the floor and a wet bed! Thunder and lightning continued but we hope it will stop soon so we can dry out again.
People are walking by in their swimwear with umbrellas up. Another thing we have noticed here is that everyone seems to have satellite TV. They spend a lot of time trying to get a signal and while they do it the dish spins round beeping like sonar. Signal isn't very good here apparently and they take it very seriously. Thank goodness we haven't got that to worry about.
Since we have been away our caravan radio has packed up. One day we couldn't switch it off so Simon disconnected it. He tried to get it back to factory setting but it wouldn't play ball. He is now bereft without some music. So he tunes in the TV to local radio with some results better than others!
Once the rain stopped we went outside and found the groundsheet was floating and the washing line was in a lake. So
we put the groundsheet over the washing line and wiped and brought everything in. Then went off for a swim. even at quarter to eight in the evening it felt warm and not cold to come out.
This morning we left and headed for Dubrovnik down the coastal road. The scenery was stunning and temperature went up to 30C. I drove some of the way and it was really winding and lots of changes in speed limits. Simon took over for the border crossing into Bosnia as the green card insurance is only in his name. We had all documents ready and we passed through the first check border which we assumed was out of Croatia and we were just waved through. When we got to the next check point we were still waved through, customs and police. We didn't even have to show passports. The gap between could only have been 10km and we had understood it was 22km of Bosnia. Talk about a let down after all the hassle to get the insurance and nobody checked! Unbelievable! Still we have to go back so are yet to know what happens then.
We drove passed Dubrovnik and
could look down on the old and new city surrounded by sea and beautiful scenery. We carried on south to Kupari. We had a site we were hoping to get into but when we arrived it was up a very narrow and steep slope which Simon thought would be difficult to get the caravan into. It also looked small and very crowded. So we drove passed looking for somewhere to turn round. We saw the Sheraton hotel, very posh with fountains playing on the forecourt and best of all a long sweeping drive in and out. so we drove through giving the doorman a bit of a shock!
We then came back to another site we had spotted. I like it but it is rather odd. We have spacious pitches in the shade and there's not many others here. The facilities are all here though rather dated but plenty of hot water. It looks a bit like an old army camp. The buildings are strange with some circular pieces on the sides which we can't make out there use but they have a hole in the middle so you can see inside.
We set up had the obligatory
cup of tea and then walked down to the beach. Kupari beach is a work in progress. The actual beach is fine though the usual man made covering over the rocks. But they are making an esplanade and some of the paving is not completed so you have to pick your way through a building site.
We walked further round to the harbour at Srebreno and booked a water taxi to get to Dubrovnik in the morning. Then back for supper and what seems to going to be the hottest night yet.
