We arrive in Dubrovnik on a stinking hot day. Our only job is to find a man named Viktor around the firestation. He is the man to lead us to our villa in the hills. This proves a most interesting task with many Croatian men being approached with, "VIKTOR?" After 15 minutes contact is finally made and we are on way into the hills, 96 steps up to be exact. Thank goodness there was a pool and cold beer waiting for us at the top. The house was Marina/Aldo, Steve/Maja, Son/Kevin, Us.
We had a home cooked meal that night...one thing that we will never take for granted again.
We were in Dubrovnik for 5 nights, Tuesday to Sunday, with the wedding on the Friday (to be blogged about seperately). Much of this week was spent partying and celebrating so we're going to write about the highlights.
Group meals and the hen's/buck's night There were many group meals organized by Maja and her family and we of course went to them all. Wednesday afternoon was a lunch of 31 people, everyone who had arrived in Dubrovnik so far. It was great to meet the few friends of Maja
and Steve's who we had never met before.
Wednesday night was the buck's and hen's night, which was a blast. The young folks started together at our apartment for the newlywed game and drinks. We met up with the rest of the parents/grandparents for a dinner that lasted until Midnight. Then the fun began.
The girls went around to various bars, the favourite being a tiny hole in the wall with great music. At one point the boys came across us there and there was lots of screaming and running away. The locals thought we were nuts.
The boys were bar-hopping as well but it was inevitable that we would meet as Dubrovnik is only so big and after 2am there are only 2 open bars just outside the city walls. We all ended up at "Fuego", a dance club just outside the Pile gate. It was hot, smoky and loud...and far too much fun! By this point you can imagine there were many inebriated people in our group and let's just say most of us didn't make it home until 5am.
The next day the bride and groom-to-be were hurting, sleeping well into the afternoon.
Hector
The cat who was always at our villa. He knocked over important papers down into a neighbour's yard and Andy saved the day by hopping fences and finding them! Success!!
That night the wedding party and family went to an AMAZING restaurant in the old port where I had the best prawns I have ever eaten in my life. I believe our friend Skate felt the same as she and I had the same dish, and that's saying a lot. She's a proper foodie and has her own food blog (www.abercrombieandfeast.com), which is LOADS better than ours!
The day after the wedding a few of us went to a restaurant that Skate really wanted to go to because she kept seeing queues each night and it came recommended to her. The food was fabulous and we shared a bunch of plates: mussles, prawns, meat, pasta, etc. The seafood in Dubrovnik was fantastic and we ate it pretty much every day!
Dubronik was a busy time but an absolute blast. When we weren't out eating/drinking, we could be found in our pool, eating and drinking. We loved seeing Maja's family and our friends who we hadn't seen in quite a while.
So far we've spoken only about the people, but the city of Dubrovnik itself is amazing. We were surrounded by the sea, hills, non-stop sun
First day in Dubrovnik
Walking down the steps to the Old Town. and beautiful homes with copper-coloured roofs. Quite a few people did the wall walk, which is the wall that surrounds the old city. The old city iself is quite touristy but the restaurants are amazing and with the 41 people staying there for the wedding, you couldn't help but randomly run into people throughout the day. It's an excellent holiday destination!
We've added lots of photos to this blog to give you a taste of our 6 days in Dubrovnik...

View from our apartment?
I might have to call you on the picture that purports to show the view from our apartment... My memory might just be fuzzy, but... How can I ever believe anything else you say on your blog again!?!?
