So at the end of our 7 hour bus trip and what not, we finally arrived at the Old Town in Dubrovnik.
Our first task was to find our room we were staying in. Well it wasn't much of a task but getting the owner to stop talking was! Nah, in all seriousness the guy was really interesting to talk to, he'd had a really interesting life. But after 7 hours on a bus without a toilet - we had other things on our minds!!
This guy deserves a sentence or two. He had been a soldier for the Yugoslav army from when he was real young. His job was to shoot at NATO (if and when they ever arrived) from the island of Vis. He also told us this lovely little story about how he had met a girl and fallen in love but he had to leave her behind when he joined the army - so he use to take his guitar into the bathroom and serenade a photo of her when he got the chance. Then one day some high up fancy army guy comes along and tells him he likes the way he sings and
Looking down the street
Just outside our front door at our apartment in Dubrovnik wants him to start singing at military events to lift the spirits of the soldiers. Long story short, this guy becomes this big famous singer and gets to travel the world! The story went on - but you get the idea.
So after a loooong awaited trip to the bathroom we headed off to look for some dinner and explore the old city a little bit. This old town has been hammered by numerous wars (as with the rest of the country) and a massive earthquake, so it has been rebuilt a few times. That said, the place looks great! It was by far my favourite place we visited. I never got sick of wandering round the old town and sitting by the water, it was just so nice. Would highly recommend Dubrovnik to anyone.
The following morning we did what all tourists do - and took a walk around the city walls. The best £5 ever spent I say. It took us 2 hours to get around it all and we got views of everything from all directions - as you'll see in the photos. For the rest of the day we spent it wandering around the
tourist sights of the old town, and also booked some tours for the coming days, and explored the local beach.
The next day we decided to go out to the island of Lokrum which is about a 30 minute boat ride from the old town. We had decided that it was time for a day of lazing on the beach and lapping up the sunshine. Now Adam was the optimist and refused to believe that there wasn't a real "beach" on the whole island and made me walk all the way around it trying to find some flat ground near the water to base ourselves. Turns out the nudist beach had the only prime location! After a quick debate about the pros and cons of getting nude with strangers. I won! My (one of many) arguments - I have never in my life seen an attractive nudist and refuse to run the risk of other people saying the same about me! Adam's argument was that they would make us look good.
So on we trudged for longer than necessary until we basically ran out of options and sat down where we gave up! We spent the afternoon having
Ready for the walk ahead of us
About to embark on a stroll around the city walls of the old town a little picnic and attempting to sunbake (see photos) and paddling in the water. All in all it was a good relaxing day - heaps of sun, brisk water and just flat out doing nothing. Was defintiely what the doctor ordered.
The following day we did a cruise around the Elaphite Islands - Kolocep, Lopud and Sipan. The full day boat trip was really good - while we only visited Kolocep and Lopud for only a few hours, we did get to spend a good amount of time on Sipan. Ange and I had heard there was a sand beach on the far side of Sipan, so we made the hike over. Was well worth it - we had found this great sandy cove and took the opportunity for a swim and sunbake before heading back to the boat.
While one could go on and on about how amazing Dubrovnik and the surrounding region is - I guess we'll let the photos say it for us. I do apoligise for so many photos but they say more than any words. It was one of those places you just had to keep taking photos to ensure you didn't miss
anything.
Dubrovnik get a 10 out of 10. I definitely set the bar high for other spots.
Following 4 days of enjoying Dubrovnik, it was time to move on (as much as we didn't want to).
Next stop Split for our last 4 days.
