We had a quiet first evening in Zagreb: mediocre pizza from the restaurant under the apartment, grocery shopping, and a decision to spend an additional night there. We decided that the best way to see Plitvice was by car, and we did not want to spend the night there. So we decided to rent a car for the day, drive the two plus hours each way to the park, and return to our lovely apartment that night. Fortunately, the apartment was available for an additional night, so we could relax and enjoy Zagreb the next day!
The next morning, we slept in, made final plans for the rest of our trip (11 nights in Split with side trips), reserved a rental car for the Plitvice trip, and then headed out on the Rick Steves walking tour of the city. We loved the old part of the city and especially the Museum of Broken Relationships, recommended by Mr. Steves and other friends! Its exhibits include personal objects left over from former lovers, accompanied by brief descriptions.
"Museum of Broken Relationships is a physical and virtual public space created with the sole purpose of treasuring and sharing your heartbreak stories and
symbolic possessions. It is a museum about you, about us, about the ways we love and lose.
At its core, the Museum is an ever-growing collection of items, each a memento of a relationship past, accompanied by a personal, yet anonymous story of its contributor. Unlike ‘destructive’ self-help instructions for recovery from grief and loss, the Museum offers the chance to overcome an emotional collapse through creativity - by contributing to its universal collection.
Museum of Broken Relationships is an original creative art project conceived by Olinka Vištica and Dražen Grubišić in 2006. It has since taken thousands of people on an empathetic journey around the world, challenging our ideas about heritage. Its original permanent location was founded in Zagreb. In 2010 it won the EMYA Kenneth Hudson Award as the most innovative and daring museum project in Europe."
We were able to enter both of the historic churches (which are not usually open to the public except for mass), and then waited awhile with the press corps for the President to give a briefing, but she didn't show. Bill and the funicular
The shortest in the world?? since 2015. She is the first woman to be elected to the office since the first multi-party elections in 1990." We chatted with the reporters about the White House stopping all briefings, and they joked knowingly about Fox News...
There were Chinese tour groups all through the city...the initiative get Chinese tourists to this area is definitely working!
We decided to end our tour with a trip to the cemetery, which turned out to be much bigger and impressive than we had expected...it went on forever, and the front wall was beautiful...
We had hoped to find a place to eat on the way home, but didn't see a single restaurant in our 20 minute walk...we decided to eat in an upscale restaurant near our apartment, and stopped by to look at the menu. It was great, and we said we'd return in an hour..we got there about an hour and a half later at 7:30, and they were closing! the waiter took pity on us and asked the cook if they could stay open...and we had a delicious meal!
The weather was mixed, but we really didn't get rain until we were headed home, and

It is owned by an artist, and was beautifully decorated and the most amazing light fixtures...I forgot to take photos... then only sprinkles.
