Staminee De Garre
The house tripel. Yesterday we took a train to Bruges. It was only an hour ride. It was sunny and warm out here. We walked from the train station to our B&B, which was about 15 minutes or so. Certain things looked very familiar from our last trip. It was busy around here though. We have the same room at the Papageno B&B as we did in 2005. It's really nice here and the bed is one full mattress, not 2 twins pushed together! After dropping our stuff off we walked around the Markt and eventually found a small sandwich shop. I got a chicken curry sandwich in a baguette. It was good. We found a statue in a small square to eat lunch at. It was relaxing and nice to sit and people watch. We walked around a bit more, then took a nap. In the evening we went to a small bar, down an alleyway, called Staminee De Garre. They are known for their house tripel, which was very good. It was really crowded for such a small place. I think it's pretty popular, and a well known place to get a good beer. Afterward we went to the Tavern Curiosa for
dinner. It's down in a cellar, so it has a very cool ambiance. We each got a beer and big dinner of soup, Flemish stew and ice cream. The stew was awesome; thick, tender meat. I was super full last night. We went to bed and got up at a reasonable hour this morning. We had breakfast, which is a nice treat. Fruit salad, an egg, bread, jam and tea. We walked to the train station to figure out the trains and ended up waiting in a line for an hour (at least)! Luckily we got our tickets to go to Prague, so that's figured out. Also we looked into the trains going to De Panne (to visit De Struisse). We stopped by this small store we went last night to get water and the same guy was there who helped us the night before. Last night he talked politics to us for awhile. He seemed to like us, and remembered us today and was telling us about cheap phone plans.
We got sandwiches again for lunch and walked to a nearby park to eat them. I really enjoyed that. We picked up more chocolates from Leonidas that I
am excited to try - I have no idea what we got, we just picked the ones that looked interesting.
We went to 't Brugs Beertje, a bar that is highly ranked on Beeradvocate.com and in the Belgian Beer Book. It was small and decorated with lots of beer signs and dried hops on the ceiling. I got a Rodenbach Grand Cru and Adam tried a different beer in the same style. It got busy in there as well. We headed to a different bar, deZolder Keldercafe, a very quiet cellar bar. They had candles in bottles on the table, and a small beer list. It was nice to be in a less crowded place. I got a banana lambic that was only okay. They played jazzy music, and it was a good time. We then walked around a bit and eventually picked up a quick bite to eat at Casa Patatas. We ate it on the wall next to a canal. We walked around after that, exploring the town. There was a church with singing come out of it, and we sat on a bench by a canal just enjoying the surroundings. We stopped off at our room

some of the beer decorations. quickly, and I heard bangs outside that sounded like fireworks. So I looked our the window and there were some! Adam thinks they were about a mile away - the sound lagged. It was exciting.
We then headed to Retsin Lucifernum to drink. The outside has become a major eyesore - scafolding and traffic cones/lights and Belgian flags everywhere. But inside was the same. Creepy busts and paintings and red lighting. We went to look around at the paintings done by the owner - naked masked people having sex, naked saints, and this one guy whose head is a statue in a square by the fish market. The drinks were super strong, but it was a lot of fun. Now it's almost 1a.m., so it's time for bed.
