Greeting all,
We have arrived in Prague and are in a lovely little campground with unlimited WiFi, yippee, we can catch up on world events.
We have spent the past few days in Vienna, and truthfully, we were not convinced, particularly after Salzburg. We stayed in the only campground open in Vienna that happened to be packed and shit. They even had squat toilets if you felt so desired. It is clear that when you get to a major city the quality of the ground drops dramatically.
We arrived in Vienna on Wednesday and as we did not get to the campground until mid afternoon we decided to have a relaxing afternoon in.
Thursday we ventured into Vienna, which was a relatively easy 30 minutes away. We walked the markets, which were awesome, so good we found ourselves there a few times drinking from the wine bars over the coming days. We walked the museum quarters, the government buildings and through the shopping district, but all in all could not quite work the whole place out. You see a beautiful old building then right next door a shitty new building, so it does not make much sense.
Anyways, after a few drinks back at the markets, we got some fresh groceries and headed back to the campground.
This is where the fun begins. When we got back we noticed that a bunch of new campers had arrived, all with fancy caravans and new Mercedes and Audis. Now to get to Lola we had to walk right past these newbies and the first time Em did this she was heckled by the 5 blokes. I was not there of course otherwise I would have unleashed Tango and Cash. After it happened a second time, I put by intimidator look on and gave them ‘the stare’, which naturally did nothing. About 15 minutes later 3 young boys (we shall refer to them as turds) came up to us and started asking questions as we had UK number plates and they were from Manchester. Now these were not smart kids, with one asking what language do we speak in Australia and then tried explaining that a boat is quicker than a plane to get to Australia. At this point I suggested he may want to concentrate a tad more at school and do his homework (first mistake).
So
after a few more wise cracks, the turds left. About 1 hour later, 5 guys wandered past the van with 4 stopping for a chat. Low and behold, these were the guys heckling Em who turned out to be the turd’s parents. Now not to get you concerned, they were pleasant enough asking where we had been, how long we were away, where are we headed, what is in the van and how much is it worth…WTF? I then asked them the same with their response, “we are gypsies”. I then did what any other bloke would do and laughed, to which they replied we actually are…oops! I managed to get back in control asking what this entails to which they indicated they travel around trying to make a living selling scrap metal, (bludging off the government more like it) and that their children do not go to school. At this point and on a rare occasion for me, my brain managed to control my mouth before the words, “no wonder you kids are as dumb as dogshit” came out. At this point one of the blokes was really scoping out the van. We managed to politely imply they were
not welcome as we were having dinner. It was then we decided that Em would not walk through the gypsy gauntlet on her own.
So Friday we headed back to Vienna Centrum. This time, we took all our valuable possessions which involved me lugging around my camera bag which contained camera, 2 lenses, video camera, hard drive, passports, Tom Tom, Ipod and also the laptop bag whilst Em’s handbag was full of the usual shit.
To try and make us appreciate Vienna more, Em came up with a plan albeit unintentional. To appreciate Vienna, you should walk around the really shit side of town, allegedly to see the river which in Em’s words “is no Swan River or Sydney Harbour” (like they should be in the same sentence). After a few hours of this, we decided a few beers at the markets were in order so back there we went via a brewery which was shite.
Back to the campsite where Lola had survived the gypsies and was not now scrap metal and after fresh fish for dinner we met up with the British backpackers we met in Salzburg for up-teen bottles of red that resulted in
a somewhat slow start today.
Overall, a fun and somewhat eventful few days however we still cannot quite work Vienna out.

Em stick close to Ben!!!
So good to read your blogs. What a wonderful time you are having and so many more stories when you come home. Helen and Ian are having drinks and nibbles before I finally leave'the old girl' and have asked the the others to come. Spending most of my time packing and finally the hire furniture goes tomorrow so I will have a camp chair and picnic table until someone can bring down the leather lounge. Putting in an offer tomorrow so let's see what happens. Love to you both... Mum xxx
