Glockenspiel
The biggest cuckoo clock in town. We were tossing around the idea of going to Prague, but couldn't figure out what exactly was drawing us there. Since we were meeting up with our friend in 3 weeks we decided to hit up Munich, home of Oktoberfest. Unfortunately, we were a little late for that. While staying at our first hostel we met a few Italian girls from Milan and decided to head to the Hofbräuhaus to get a few litres of beer and some sausage. After hitting the beer house we decided to split since the girls were getting up early and we were ready to tear up the town. We headed to this place called KultFabrik, which is basically a huge complex of warehouses with like 50 bars and nightclubs in it. Once we found the place we instantly were disappointed because there was NOTHING going on...it was a sunday night. Cut us some slack though, while traveling we have only a general idea of dates and so we are prone to such mistakes. We knew it was a saturday or sunday or monday...we took our chances. The next morning we were in for another surprise. We were booted from our hostel. See throughout our trip
Munich River
A shot from a bridge in Munich.. we rarely book hostels ahead because there are so many things like that will only complicate travel plans further...anyway we also rarely pay for more than 2 nights in one place in case it sucks. This time we got worried about not finding a spot and so we booked ahead, and this place did suck...An Italian guy woke us up and told us we had one mintue to leave even though we had already paid through the night...we had to get our stuff out of the room and check back in at 2 o'clock, lame! We got our money back and took our stuff to this other hostel which turned out to be way cooler. That same day was spent cruising around the technological museum since it was the only thing that was open and cruised back to the Hofbräuhaus. It is just so good when it hits your lips!!! We ended up going out with a few Aussies, a canadian, and an american who looked like the comedian carrot top....plus a few Lbs. Carrot Top was finishing up a B.S in brewology in Germany, or something like that, and was telling us all sorts of information about beer like
Carrying on the Legacy
We finally found what the HB on the huge mug at our parent's house stands for... the appropriate temperature beer should be kept at and the proper CO2 levels...we eventually tuned him out. Apparently, Samuel Adams skipped the chapter about the effects of too much beer on your bladder and your touch with reality because he ended up peeing his pants in our hostel..haha. Yeah, a 20 something year old guy peed his pants with a bunch of strangers around...too funny
The following day we headed to check out the Dachau Concentration Camp. We rented some audio guides to give us some of the history on what it was we were seeing. Hearing the testimonials from some surviviors made the place feel that much more eerie. We had seen something similiar in Cambodia, but this hit us just as hard. We walked through the barracks where the prisoners slept on nothing more than wooden shelves, but the crematorium was by far the saddest place. It housed the gas chambers that were made to look like showers, the store rooms for the surplus of bodies (the furnaces couldn't keep up) and the furnaces themselves. It was insane to think that this could happen and just a few hundred yards away people were chatting a local restaurant
Prost!
Take the damn picture my shoulder is getting sore. going about their daily lives. After touring Dachau we had all but finished the things we wanted to do in Munich so we reserved a spot on the train to Austria so we could get a little culture in Vienna.
Vienna was a very low key place...mostly because it was a public holiday and everything was closed...AGAIN...Damnit! Apparently, we follow public holidays and strikes around Europe (so far we have hit two of each). One night, while there we decided to check out the night life and headed to a local "bar." This bar looked more like a spray painted metal shack and wasn't really in the best part of town. We only stayed for a drink because everyone looked a little sketch and were either rolling joints on the tables or were too stoned for us to have a good time. The next day we went to the House of Music which explained the science of music and the history of Mozart and Beethoven. Other than that, all we have to say is that the architecture in Vienna is amazing and the hot dogs are good. It is really crazy because you will see this awesome building that
Pretzels & Beer
for only 49 cents you can go BIG!!!! is hand carved marble or something crazy and look down to see the golden arches...yeah it is now a Mickey D's. We were sick of brauts, Sauerkraut, beer and hot dogs and thought pizza didn't sound too bad so we took the train to Venezia. We were tossing around the idea of Budapest to do some spelunking. We figured that this could cut into the time in Italy or even worse Spain. Esto un grande problem por que las senoritas es muy bonita aquel. We have been practicing...Well, we are off to Florence and will catch you up on Venezia, Roma and Sorento later...until then.
