Today we took a day trip to Hallstatt in the lake country.
This was to be a major stop on our tour and we were planning to spend several restful days there; however mother nature intervened, the cold rainy weather the past week, made the thought of camping in the moutains unsavory.
It was only a few days ago that we planned to go today to Hallstatt, which turned out to be the perfect day!
We caught the bus, a little more cramped than the train, but that's O.K.. We saw some nice little towns on the way up and saw a wonderful moutain lake at Oberion, where we had to switch form the bus to the train.
Winding it's way through the moutains the train dropped us off at an abandoned station across form Hallstatt, a short walk down the hill and we got a board the "Stephanie" for a leasurly boat ride across the lake to the town.
Post card perfect dosen't begain to discribe this perfectly quaint mountain villa. We wandered down what I suppose were allieways but were the size of hallways. It's only a few hundred yards form the shore to the mountain
face. The town looks and is a collection of box like houses stacked next to and on top of one another, making for a jumble maze of streets and passages. Fortunitly is such a small place that you can only get lost for a minute. We emerged at the base of the stares to the church. Once at the top we found a tiny cemetary surrounded the church. Inside it was a beautiful gothic scence complete with gilded ornimtation. 3 altars were there with amazing gold guilded scenes in giant display windows. afira lit 2 candles..one for teddys dad and one for her uncle junior.
In back it had it's own tiny bone chappel. only here the families painted the skulls of the dead with flowers and laurels.
we wandered a bit more and saw the waterfall from allthe way up the mountain cutting its way down the middle of hallstat..and passed the museum ..i didnt want to spend the money on a museum about the early celts..when our last "come see the celts" experience was sorely lacking....
and everything was so expensive.....so we had lunch at the cheapest place we could find..(still too much for not much)
and got ie cream..(yumm) and some pins for our hats....a new neck pouch for afira (mine ripped open, it was only a buck from goodwill) at a camping store/ souvenire store. its a wonderful place....not to be missed but the tourists have found hallstat and so its never going back to totally quaint...sighn were all over abut the locals not wanting to be put on anymore unesco sites as they wont even be able to move the furniture in their own homes after that..adn pics will be taken of everything..so they are fighting it.
on the way back grizz borrowed one of the shops leather punches and punched 3 new holes on his belt...we still look fat but everything is fitting better..weight is still being dropped so yay!
take the train home....not the bus cuz a lady said it was the same price...well were not listening to any more people....cuz it was not! but it was more comfortable....except for the german jehovas witness who stepped into our train cabin...omg....GERMAN JEHOVAS WITNESSES!! UGH!! WTF??!!
anyway get back to salzberg..beautiful day..didnt rain here..our towels are dry....things are good....we have decided to do laundry tonight...(by hand and dry it in
the dryer..i have 1 token left..and they have a little centrifuge to dry the clothes from hand washing ..so were good....
and then tomorrow....OFF TO MUNICH!
cuz were tired of this town...and need some better beer gardens!! tomorrow is a holiday all the world over we guess..so everything is closed...we can get into town...get into 'the tent' in munich and fight a cheap kebap stand just like here which will hopefully be open.....(we have been living on this cheap turkish gyro type food since we got here..cheap, gyro like and yummy!) so maybe more cheap kebaps from the train station..and then off to munich.
