Yesterday we met a young South Korean girl named Chi yesterday evening when she checked into our room. She was very nice and able to speak and understand English pretty well. Her and Manoli got to talking a lot, so this morning when we were packing up to leave for Innsbruck and found out she was going there too, we offered to give her a ride. We found out along the way that she already had reservations at the same hostel as we did, the Youth Hostel Fritz Prior-Schwedenhaus. The trip to Innsbruck was pretty short, at around 100 kilometers. We quickly passed into Austria, and realized we hadn't stopped to get our U.S. passports stamped. We'll ask at the Rathaus or Police Station to make sure we don't need the stamp. We might get it ... read more

We've had the perfect biking day today. It was coolish but not cold and the bike trail went through some beautiful countryside. The Zillertal valley that we left is well worth returning to but time does not permit to explore it. Out of Strass we passed several ruins and castles until we reached Rattenberg which we stopped at to view the notable old town dating back to the 12th century. On the hill behind the town is a ruined castle or fort below which is the small but delightful town complete with alleys, cobbled streets, archways and a touristy main street with many glassware shops. We indulged in a very nice "kaffe und kuchen" from Hackers which is renowned for it's lovely cakes and pastries. From hereon it was full speed ahead through lovely countryside until ... read more

It wasn't a good start to our biking tour with cold, dull weather. Yes, it's plummeted from 30 degrees a couple of weeks ago to 12 degrees. If that wasn't enough we had a head wind (shades of the Danube). But, we have the gear and it was all on for a couple of hours. The Inn River Cycling Trail (the Innradweg) is in superb condition and is well signposted all the way starting at St Moritz in Switzerland. The Inn River is running fast and is full of silt at present from all the recent rain up high in the mountains. The cloud stayed up high and we didn't get any rain all day. Also, as the day went on it warmed up so that by the time we reached Wattens the sun was out. ... read more

It's a drizzly day in Innsbruck with temps like spring at home but never mind, it's not too hot! We set off to walk and see what eventuated. The hotel isn't far from the Old Town centre so we were soon into narrow alley ways, palaces, churches and old town houses with their intricate doors and frescoes. Also, there were the inevitable bus tour groups crowding this area! We figured they visited the Old Town, then the Swarovski factory and moved on, city by city throughout Europe. Central Innsbruck is really lovely and is a must see even though we've been here before. It is set in the Inn valley between high mountains on both sides with a narrow plain in between. We walked through the town, out the old town gate and on towards the ... read more

I thought today wasn't going to be worth writing up as it was to be a travel day but it wasn't quite as straight forward as expected. We left Haetzingen at 9am and changed trains at the bottom of the valley at Ziegelbrucke, then onto Sargans. This was a reminder to us of where we started our Alpine Pass Route trail across Switzerland some 10 years ago. At Sargans we changed to the Budapest Express train but could only go to Bludenz as the railway was closed for many kilometers due to works being done over the past few months. Here, everyone had to alight from the train and get onto a number of buses to take us through to Otztal. To this point we have left Switzerland, gone through Liechtenstein and into Austria. The bus ... read more

Llano y carril bici. A pesar de que el plan original era dormir arriba del siguiente paso, como he ... read more

Day out in Innsbruck today and it was excellent. Super blue sky when we woke so Kisbee leapt out of the garage, all-raring to go and we set off. Took the main 171 road in, though we had hoped to find a quieter route. Not terribly happy being on dual carriageways on the scooter especially as at one point it even acquired a third lane but we got there safely in 20 minutes or so. Once across the bridge over the river Inn we were in the city. Along with lots and lots of other tourists especially being a Saturday. We parked Kisbee where we found lots of other bikes and scooters and went into the old part of the town. Could barely move for the first half an hour, as there was a wedding in ... read more

Today we drove to the lovely Austrian Tyrol, to Hall in Tyrol near Innsbruck. Gorgeous blue sky for a gorgeously scenic drive. First of all we drove along the lake, West towards Lienz where we could have taken a route via Italy and the Dolomites but opted for the Austrian Alps instead. Then to Mittersil, north to Kitzbuhel and St Johann in Tyrol. Last stretch was West to Innsbruck via Worgl. We went over mountains, round mountains, through a couple and were for almost all of the day surrounded by the most stunning scenery. Mountains in every direction, snow topped often, rocky crags, fields full of wild flowers, Heidi chalets bedecked with bright flowers, waterfalls tumbling down the mountain sides, cows with bells a jangling, deep valleys, ski resorts and chair lifts, villages and towns nestling ... read more

Hello again everyone, and to our new friend Florian. Welcome to our trip to Europe. After two days of rain and even snow on higher elevations, the clouds are parting the sun is peaking out. God again has cleaned the air and refreshed these beautiful mountains. As we say in Colorado, tomorrow we " break camp" and head for the beautiful limestone mountains of northern Italy The Dolomites. We say goodbye to one beautiful region to look to another. We will spend a week in a valley called the Val Badai. It is about a 3 to 4 hour drive. Will keep you abreast of our travels. Here are some pictures from today and a couple from before the rain. God bless LOWELL .... read more

Hello you folks This could be the last blog for a few days as the weather forcast for this region is dior. I know I've been sending quite a few mountain scenes, so maybe you are getting a little tired of those. So Gloria and I walked around the village we are staying in and I took a few of the holiday apartments around us. There is not a straight ar flat street anywhere in the village. This is pretty much an unknown region for Americans. Mostly there from Holland and Germany. So here you go till the next blog as ever Lowell... read more
