That is supposedly the direct translation of Eisriesenwelt in the town of Werfen where I visited from Salzburg a few days ago. It contains the largest ice cave in the world. Also in Werfen is Berg Hohenwerfen, a medieval castle which, aside from the incredible setting in a narrow valley, puts on a very cool trained raptor show. Another easy day trip from Salzburg was to Untersberg although hiking ... Read Full Entry

Hole was initially used to dump boiling pitch on attackers then later used as a toilet. Reminded me of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Munich
Be sure to get a Rusan or Radler when in Munich--its a very delightful beer and lemonaid mix that I had for every meal Love the ice caves pics! Happy Travels Jon, Jim

Nice!
That's a beautiful pic of you with the Alps in the background. Thanks for the scoop on cheap digs in a part of the world I hope to visit some day and maybe try to revive my rusty German. I like your focus on hiking and climbing. Some day mine will be global birdwatching, which is also a way to see dramatically beautiful landscapes. Thanks Jon for this series of posts.
