So sadly I lost the battle with fighting off the cold I felt like I could get the day before we left. I took my trusty Zicam’s and thought I had won Saturday/Sunday, but I knew last night that the battle was won. So I am very sniffley and sneezing like crazy, but I am not going to let it slow me down. We slept in a little bit (7:30) as we were originally going to go up the Zugpitze, which is the highest peak in the German Alps. We drove to where you catch the cable car up last night on the way to the hotel to check it out. Ultimately we decided not to do it. It would’ve been almost $150 to go up which takes 45 min each way, and the mountains do not have any snow on them. We just didn’t think it was worth the time or the money.
We had a good breakfast at our Guest house and discovered that 3 other couples had also enjoyed the Markethouse Restaurant for dinner the night before. The owner had a nice breakfast spread and even made soft boiled eggs which she brought out with cute little
Stiegel Weisse
Now this wheat beer was the best, I dont know if it was the taste or the name that I liked better. If you know me you can imagine me staying SCHTAGEL VASSA! in my best German voice knitted covers on them. Matt’s was a ski hat and mine was a chicken…too cute. We walked to and spent an hour or so enjoying Mittenwald. It was truly quintessential in terms of what you think of when you think of that perfect little German town. We looked though a lot of neat shops. I was able to visit the pharmacy for some cold medicine and get some good Kleenex to tie me over. We sat outside and had big cappuccinos before hitting the road towards Salzburg.
Our drive was mostly though Austria and all Autobahn, but beautiful nonetheless. A funny change of events is that we are actually using the Peugot’s navigation now. We figured it out, and it works out better as Matt can easily see the display. The portable unit they gave us was a Garmin and we couldn’t stand its constant talking and “recalculating” crap. This works out much better as we just turn the sound down. Today was the first day we turned on the radio for our 2 hour drive, and we quickly discovered that there is obviously a love for Elton John and the Lion King soundtrack here LOL. We heard the
songs on several stations many times. Also funny was “Born to Run” covered in German….Go Jersey!
We are staying at a newer motel in Salzburg from a chain in Europe called Motel One. It’s a super modern hotel with interesting features like you must have your key in this slot on the inside for the lights to work (energy conservation at its max) and once you insert that key your flat screen TV comes on with ultra-soothing music and a video of a fish tank. Tres cool….
We caught the bus into the historic part of Salzburg, which I will be honest and say is much smaller than we thought. We were hungry, so stopped for a snack and shared a plate of schnitzel and Radlers. I forgot to mention that discovery yesterday. A Radler is half beer, half lemon soda. I’ll say I thought it sounded disgusting myself when I first heard of it, but it is YUMMY. So refreshing….doesn’t taste too much like beer, doesn’t overly taste like lemon. It’s a malt beverage kind of taste. Shopping seems to be a big focus here and we spent some time wandering the streets and visiting some shops.
There is a large fortress/castle on a hill here that offers amazing views of the city. It is from the 1400s and I think how they tortured people there was by the walk up. OMG I was dying….granted with my cold oxygen doesn’t seem to be getting through my lungs as quickly, but it was a hell of a climb! Thank goodness the view was very beautiful from up there, and we were also able to sit in a little outside café and share an Apple Strudel with a great view of the Austrian countryside leading out of Salzburg.
We hiked back down and wandered around a bit before deciding to grab dinner. We ate at a nice place on a tiny alley. We feel a bit disappointed at how everything was closed up by the time we were done eating. Europeans are notorious for not eating dinner until 8-9pm. We were done with dinner at 8:15pm and wanted to find somewhere different to sit outside and have a cappuccino….the city was literally asleep. I really thought Salzburg was more substantial, but I guess not. We had no choice but to head back to the hotel.
