We had breakfast at the hotel, quite a lovely buffet, almost as nice as the Gellert in Budapest. Gary went to his meeting and I went to check email. We are waiting for Baby Andy to arrive… Betsy and Matt are at the hospital. No news yet.
I walked to the Salzburg town center, going in churches and just poking around as I went. I visited the beautiful St. Andra Church, where I lit a candle for the new grandson coming today. Then I visited the Holy Trinity Church. I made my way across the river and stopped at the Salzburg Museum. It had a great exhibit on Middle Age Church relics and art, which I enjoyed. It also had a video of a man walking around with a video camera, and the GPS recording it on the computer with the video as he walked through Salzburg. I found it especially interesting since I have my documentary students do a project on place... with a video component.
I walked through the Erzabtel St. Peters, complex of several churches, cemetery, quite impressive! The cemetery was one of the most beautiful I’ve even seen! It was built
Mozart statue
and want-to-be against the bottom of the Monchs Berg (stone mountain), and there was a church higher up the rock that one could not visit. The graves were very well kept with flowers and plantings, and many had a sculptural element on a metal pole.
I went to the Museum of Modern Art, and enjoyed the photography exhibited there. They have a huge collection, over 30,000 photos, but not much on view. They had an interesting print show and some conceptual work on the upper floors.
I stumbled upon a market in one of the main squares of Salzburg, and bought a sausage with sweet mustard and ate standing up with the locals. It hit the spot! The market had an interesting cheese booth with a huge cheese cutter, flowers, fig breads, meats, vegies and fruit, etc. Very nice!
I walked home just as it started raining. The day had cooled off and the rain was a welcome sight to me!
I checked email and found that I have a new grandson. Baby Andy was born at 2:08 am on July 6th! He had a few issues from birth and
was in the NICU, doing well. 7lbs. 14 oz. and “really long.” Betsy and Matt are exhausted but also doing well.
We went to a 5:00 pm classical concert at the Baroque Museum, “Mousik in Mirabell: Salzburger Klassik.” Two young men, a twentytwo year old pianist and a sixteen year old celloist, played selections from Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and Dvorak. It was wonderful, and the museum setting of Baroque painting models for cathedrals and churches in Europe was perfect!
Gary and I met Susie Pryor and her mother Maryanne and Washburn Business student Mandy Thimmesch at the Salzburg Castle for dinner. We had to take the tram up, and were rewarded with a beautiful terrace restaurant with a magnificent view! We had watercress cream soup and sausages for dinner, and wine spritzers that Susie discovered. We watched the sun set and headed home. Another delightful evening…. and a new grandson!
