So, on the bus yesterday from Vienna to Salzburg my mind was pre-occupied with a radical new plan. Mel (whom I met in Morocco) said that Joelene had never cancelled her accommodation at Oktoberfest and it was up for grabs. Since I, truly, can't be bothered taking trains around Switzerland by myself, and David is quite right in saying I'm nts for being nextdoor to Oktoberfest and not going, I decided to scrap Switzerland and head to Munich instead! I hadn't had any desire to go there but now that I'm going, I'm super excited!
Anyway, we're staying at YOHO Hostel in Salzburg, land of The Sound of Music, and David and I got a double room here. We set off right away on a free walking tour, which definitely beat Salzburg for the worst walking tour ever. The Guide was really young, clearly didn't want to be there, was hopped up on Redbulls (Salzburg is also home to Redbull) and David and I were the only two on the tour. The highlight was when the tour guide's sister, who was tagging along, walked headfirst into a pole (possibly one of the funniest things I've ever seen). We saw
a statue of Mozart where he used to live, and that was really the only interesting part. After the tour, David and I were starving so we walked to the main street and had pizza and beer.
Salzburg is a pretty ordinary place, in my opinion, and I wouldn't minded if I'd missed it entirely.
We spent the night at the hostel bar and I went to bed by 11pm. David came in around 3am and snored like crazy, so I didn't get back to sleep until 6 (I was furious).
This morning, I woke up and berated David for his snoring, but then we had a great time lying in bed and laughing and playing. At one point, the cleaning lady walked in on us in a very compromising position, which we're laughing about now but were horrified at the time.
We had delicious ham and cheese sandwiches, Cokes and apples for lunch, then left for our tour of the Ice Caves. I sat with Mel on the bus (I could barely stand being away from David for so long). Also on the tour: Jarrod, Mel, Vee and Emily. Our tour guide was absolutely hilarious
and made the hour-long bus ride a great one.
When we arrived at the Ice Caves, we had to walk up the mountain, which was tiring but had fabulous Alps-views and fresh air. We took Europe's (maybe the world's?) steepest cable car up to the cave, then ventured in. It was really dark and cold (zero degrees), but the ice formations were cool. Vee (poor little Aussie) was freezing, so I, being the tough Canadian, gave her my jacket, which I sincerely regretted afterwards because by the time I was out, I was frozen solid. We had apple strudel and hot chocolate and took some photos, and then it started raining and we hit the road. I really wished I could curl up on a couch in a blanket with a movie. We spent a little time in bed when we got home, trying to get warm, wrapped in a blanket writing in our journals. He can't remember anything that's happened, what with all the drinking he does... he'd truly be lost without me!
After a while, we went down to the bar for dinner (a burger, grostl-potatoes and bacon- and salad). David and Jarrod decided to hit
the town, but the girls and I stayed at the bar and had one of the best nights of my trip thus far. It was Mel from Morocco, 35-year-old Mel, and Vee and I. We talked about sex and men and everyone got pretty graphic and it was great.
When David returned, he, 35-year-old Mel and I went up to our room and I suspect that she wanted to have a threesome, but we finally got her out and went to sleep. I was super hungover and cranky in the morning. We walked into town to get some money and I fought back tears at the thought that I was parting from him for two days (he'd planned to stay in Salzburg for a couple of extra days). We saw an old man peeing on a tree, penis in full sight, which was pretty nasty.
When we got back to the hostel, David decided to scrap Salzburg and come to Munich. I don't know if he did it just because he wanted to stay with me, but I was pretty happy nonetheless!
