City and Fortress
Good view river, Salzburg and Fortress May 21, 2008
Wow, we had another busy day. We both got to sleep quickly but my cell phone rang at 3:47am and woke us. I was unable to get the call before it dropped. The call was from area code 413. We did recognize so I did not try to call back. For your info, I will disconnect my phone as I go to sleep every night. If you need us to call when we get up, send me a text message which I will get when I reconnect and then reach you.
We decided to take a tour of Salzburg for the day. We arranged to go through the tour group that we used on Tuesday afternoon. This meant that we needed to arrive at the meeting place at the main train station at 8:30am. We had a full buffet breakfast at the hotel and got at the station right on schedule.
The tour started with a two hour ride east to Salzburg. Most of the trip is in Bavaria, Germany and when you cross the border you enter Austria, near Salzburg. Jackie and I fought off more sleep all the way.
Once there we took a short bus

Salzburg is noted for its chocolates ride to the Mirabell Garden where several scenes of the “Sound of Music” were filmed. High above the garden is the Fortress (Festung Hohensalzburg). It was used for many purposes over the years but was meant to protect the Bishops here.
Our tour took us to the home of Mozart. He grew up and lived here and actually was the organist at the Cathedral. We were impressed with the variety of shopping available in the village.
This tour offered us three hours of our own time which we filled with a trip up the cable car to the fortress. It was very impressive and provides great views of the entire area. The weather was once again not the best but did not stop us from having a great trip.
One of the things that this area is best known for is their chocolate. Jackie met a server bringing out some fresh cake just for us. Another surprise was in a shop that sold painted eggs…by the million. They really were pretty but not something that we could haul for the next several weeks back home.
Jackie also found some small water colors that she wanted. She was upset that I

This is must see on our tour begged her to let it go. This was the very first vendor that she encountered and wanted to buy right away. We saw more later that she liked better but I still urged no. I know that I will not win this battle many more time.
Our return trip was interesting since the train that we boarded did not go all the way back to Munich. So, our guide got an idea from another passenger that we could take another route to Munich that was not much longer. What he did not know was it was 1.5 hours longer. We were to be back by 7:00pm but actually arrived after 8:30pm. Overall we were very happy that we went and want to thank my niece, Pam Smith for encouraging us to go over to Salzburg.
We were exhausted and decided that we would not go out for dinner. Instead, I picked up a slice of pizza and Jackie got a Burger King hamburger (I refused American food so soon).
That’s it for today. Tomorrow will be Dachau.
