So I'm new to this travelblog business... this first post is a test post before I head out on my Central American trip and continue this ridiculous travelblog business there... thanks for playing!
I am traveling with good friends Kevin Martinico, Robert Schock, and Jon Moga (who has been down in the area for a few months).
When I first shared with friends and family that I would be travelling to Nicaragua for an adventure trip, a few thought it was fantastic. Most everyone else said, "Are you nuts??!!" In particular my mom said when I first told her, "I'll put you on the church prayer list" and my Dad says repeatedly when I make mention of the trip, "I don't want to talk about it."
The country is relatively calm compared to past years (i.e. Sandinista contras!!!) but still it is "a fragile democracy" (with Daniel Ortega back in charge). There are warnings and reports of tourist robberies and occasional kidnappings for ransom, posted on the US Embassy international travel safety and security website (I have that link but am deciding not to post it). There are reportedly highjackings as well. I say "WOO HOO!" this is
Martinico and me Drew
Respectful and tolerant of other people and cultures... obviously. going to be a blast!... but yes we'll all be careful. If anyone wants to take anything from me, they can have it - nothing I'll have with me will be worth risking my neck for.
Of course, we'll be respectful of the local people and culture. We are guests in their home country.
Yes, we will temporarily suspend our tendency to be raging d*ckheads.
I am flying into Managua, Nicaragua and synching up with the travel crew on Saturday, 5/30. Kevin and I fly out of San Juan, Costa Rica on Saturday, 6/6 - with a layover in Miami (staying on South Beach) and return to Denver on Sunday, 6/7.
Tentative itenerary is:
1) heavy drinking... and get the hell out of Managua ASAP (dirty and dangerous city)
2) more heavy drinking... and spend 2 days and a night in Granada (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granada)
3) even more heavy drinking... and spend 2 days and a night on Isla de Ometepe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ometepe_Island)
4) a ton more heavy drinking (wait, I'm sensing a theme here)... and spend 3 days and 2 nights in San Juan del Sur and get some surfing and beach time in (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_juan_del_sur)
I
did just get the following e-mail from Kevin who has been down there for a week:
"btw, it's been really really nice in Guate,...a little rain, but nice. Now we are in Sal and it's humid and hot as f*ck! I'm thinking if it's this bad the whole time....we might want to trek to Monte Verde with Jon and do the zip lines...I guarantee it will be the highlight of your trip...if we can work it out with time. It'll be cooler in the highlands too...which will be a good change of pace. I am soaked in sweat right now and I am just sitting here and it's 8:15pm."
The key to a good adventure trip is to go with the flow, so who knows what we'll get into? Zip lines in Monte Verde... sounds good to me!!!
Stay tuned for more.
... and shite I haven't started packing yet... and I haven't bought quite a few things I need for the trip yet... I work best under pressure!
Cheers (and Salud),
- Drew
