Laguna Apoyo is the largest crater lagoon in Nicaragua with a surface area of 2,110 hectares and is part of the Nicaraguan volcanic chain. The crater is considered to be a sleeping volcano and was formed approximately 23,000 years ago, after a strong volcanic explosion left a hole six kilometres in diameter. The water is the most crystal clear out of all fresh water bodies in Nicaragua and a leafy forest covers the slopes of the crater.

Laguna Apoyo is very close to Granada, only a 30 minute drive. We took a transfer and arrived around 3:30pm but unfortunately the afternoon rains had started so we had to wait until the next morning to see the lake in all its glory.

We spent the next two days enjoying the lake and relaxing. Each morning we got up and headed down to the lake. Our hostel had a bar and restaurant on the waters edge so we had everything we needed. We mostly spent our time swimming, jumping off the pontoon and I enjoyed just floating in an inner tube. We also used the kayaks and did a little exploring around the lake, played table tennis and played with a
rugby ball.

We woke up the morning we were leaving to constant rain and low clouds. We had been hoping to do a day tour around the lake to some of the lookouts and small villages but decided we wouldn't be able to see much so skipped it.

Next stop Managua for our bus to Honduras
