Only 12 weeks to go!
With only twelve weeks left in Jamaica I really feel like I need to see everything here I possibly can. So, I’m hoping to have good trips for the rest of my time here.
This past week I’ve been very lucky and made it out of the convent on a couple of nights. Last Sunday I had the pleasure of going to a jazz concert with my friend Dwight. Dwight was performing (he’s a musician). The music from the whole night was awesome. I really enjoyed listening.
Probably one of my most exciting outings was this past Thursday, when I got asked if I wanted to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Portia Simpson Miller, Jamaica’s first woman Prime Minister. Dwight asked me on Thursday afternoon if I wanted to go with him-he was invited because he’s one of Jamaica’s premiere performers. I jumped at the opportunity. So, with 5 minutes to get ready I put on a dress and heels and was out the door. We had great seats. We pulled our chairs up next to the velvet dividing rope and Portia and PJ Patterson (former PM) were in full view. There were
The Prime Minister!!!
We had great seats. I sat right next to the velvet rope. Here's Portia, and former PM PJ Patterson. all sorts of “big-shots” at the swearing-in ceremony including the Prime Ministers’ from several Caribbean countries, and members of the US Congress. I was really excited to be able to witness such an important event for this country. I don’t think I’ll forget it.
Saturday was another exciting day for me. The Passionists volunteers, Meg, and I all headed to Port Antonio on the north coast. Port Antonio seemed like a great town to spend some time relaxing. It wasn’t as tourist oriented as Ochi or Mo-Bay. It maintained a Jamaican identity. We went with the intention of visiting the Blue Lagoon (from the Brooke Shields movie “Blue Lagoon). We did visit the Lagoon, also known as “Blue Hole”, which pretty much describes it all. The pool was Safire colored and looked very deep. However, not much else was going on there. Apparently there used to be a restaurant and bar that gave access to the Lagoon, but it has been closed down. Locals offered to take us on a bamboo raft around the lagoon but we opted out. The lagoon was beautiful but it didn’t have much to offer. It lacked a beach. So, we all headed to
Frenchman’s Cove, a beach that had been recommended to Eric. Frenchman’s Cove was wonderful. The waves were crashing on the shore. It was the roughest sea I’ve seen since being in Jamaica, which doesn’t say much since the water has always been extremely calm since being here. The waves were fun to play in. It was nice to let the water carry you a few feet before dropping you down again. We spent the whole day just relaxing in the warm sun.
After a long hot Mass on Sunday, the St. Pius X combined choir headed to a recording studio to attempt the beginnings of our CD. We now officially have one song done, and we will begin rehearsing song number two next Sunday. Being at the studio wasn’t exactly a party. We scrunched 30ish people into a small room to sing, and then listen to our mistakes. Once inside the studio I wanted to sing…who wouldn’t, it was a real recording studio. We did successfully record the song after almost an hour and a half. Needless to say, everyone was ready to head home.
Last night I had an interesting dream. Fr. Burchell is always making jokes
about people’s love lives. He always is finding someone to refer to as my boyfriend (none of it ever true). Anyway, last night I dreamt that Fr. Burchell tried to set me up with the fictional dentist’s son from Pius. He pushed me and the son out the door and then (here’s the best part) threw his wallet and fancy cell phone at me and said to have a good time. The dream ended by us trekking through snow and then taking cover outside from tornadoes (I don’t think those parts took place in Jamaica).
I told Fr. Burchell about my dream this afternoon, and he has now decided that he needs to definitely throw me his wallet someday and follow through with the dream. I won’t turn the offer down!
On some random notes:
Yesterday afternoon a colony of ants decided to take over mine and Meg’s shower and make it their new home. They even brought up all of their larvae. I watched them for a little bit and then decided to send them to their new home…the grave. I sprayed them with bug spray and then rinsed them down the drain. Not 3 hours
Blue Lagoon
It's pretty blue. later, were they all back, this time they didn’t bring their future generations. We sprayed and rinsed again. Then, this morning, they were back, only this time crawling out from near the showerhead and the drain. Nothing can stop these persistent ants….how will I ever get clean when they shower with me.
Sr. Paola told me that I’m “too free” because I was slouching during our community meeting. This made for an interesting meeting.
