Walt and Nugget
Just before the journey What a fun few days we've had!
After the rafting, we've also done horeseback riding and mountain biking!
HORSEBACK Yesterday we signed up for the horseback ride. I was sure to take an allergy pill before we got on the horses, as I seem to be VERY allergic to them and will swell up without a pill.
Silvia (the German owner) was one of the guides, as well as Allan (Ireland) and Lindsay (Canada) plus a Honduran man that I didn't get the name of who was breaking in one of their new baby horses on his first trail, ride. Walt got a pretty golden horse called "Nugget" and I got a brown one with white feet called "Pata Blana" (foot white).
It was a few hours up the road from the hotel through several small villages. We then reached the home of a wealthy local man who came along with us (apparently not to norm) and so we were able to go back into his property to ride. What a beautiful property he has!!! It was so nice to have the breeze blowing and riding on lovely paths covered with trees and plants.
We
rested for lunch (picnic) at the side of a small swimming hole on the river. So peaceful. The water was quite chilly but felt great after being out in the sun.
It was then back to the trails and back to the hotel. We were SO sore from the saddles that Walt and I thought we wouldn't be able to do the biking today. We did... but just barely. Not sure I can walk now 😊
We then lazed by the pool and slept in the hammocks... again.
Mountain Biking Well, we woke up with sore butts from the saddle yesterday but were determined to make it on this biking trip as well. They were scrounging around for helmets and finally found 4 of them for those of us riding (minus the Honduran guide named "Roca" who wore just his ballcap). They tried to give me a rafting helmet with earflaps at first that looked a little like a hockey helmet but then found a helmet that looked like a similar one I had when I was about 6 - big and round with no shape nor style. haha
We were also joined by
GREAT Scenary
This was in the local man's private property. VERY nice space! a father and son (14 years old) from Toronto named Chris and Mike. Nice pair.
Before we even got on the bikes, it was into the pickup truck for over an hour ride up the mountain and past several villages. The fact that it took us over an hour in the truck, I knew we were in for a long ride.
We got to the top (pretty much as far as you can possibly go in vehicle) up the mountain and started our ride. It was a little scary at first, as it's been a few years since I was on a bike that wasn't stationary, plus the steep downhill start and unpaved roads had me gripping the brakes pretty hard.
I think that was the scariest part of the whole thing, that the roads were often gravel and going quickly down them, I constantly imagined myself skidding and losing balance then sliding across the gravel road with my body... luckily, this did not happen.
Most of the ride was downhill so that was fairly easy. There were many flat areas and a few upwards battles. The toughest was about half way through our ride. The
hill is HUGE and so we walked up the whole way through the winding roads. That probably took 30-45 minutes in itself. I don't know. You lose track of time out here without a watch.
We did stop at a BEAUTIFUL swimming spot for another picnic lunch. This one had a much bigger swimming area and a pretty little swim through some rocks over to a little waterfall. SO refreshing after I felt like I was dying in the heat. I also swore I'd never ride a horse and bike in succession again!!!! My butt was killing me!
It was then about another 25 minutes back to the hotel. The whole ride was apparently about 23-26 kms!
First thing I did was jump in the pool once we were back. Walt grabbed a hammock and hasn't moved from it since. haha.
Plan for the afternoon is to relax by the pool and in the hammocks again. It's then off to Comayagua tomorrow morning. We'll see if we have the energy to make the carpets this year. I really want to help but am unsure if I have it in me to pull an all-nighter. We shall
Pata Blanca and I
"Pata Blanca" means "White Foot" as he had 3 white feet and 1 brown. see.
Enjoying our vacation for sure. Hope all is well with everyone at home.
