And the horrors continue....

Edit Blog Post

that is us speaking spanish to the population of Xela! 3 weeks of studying and I'm not sure if we should be allowed to speak to locals 😉

Anyway, I am sorry that it took us so long to update the blog but in all fairness, there is not too much to tell you guys. Here's a short summary of the semi exciting things we've been up to the past 2 weeks though.

There's a few things to see around Xela and it's great that our school offers activities to visit some of the places. We went up a little hill called El Baul and on the top is the grave from one of the nations heroes Tecun Uman. My teacher said that you can climb up the monument but Ed din't go up all the way, it was a bit slippy and it is scarier than it looks in the pictures. Unfortunately I was sick a couple of days and I wasn't able to visit San Andrés Xecul. They have a mad colourful church there and San Simon resides in that village as well. Apparently he's moving to different households throughout the city and you won't believe what he looks like! It's some puppet that looks like Elvis! Big sideburns on him and all! Ed forgot to bring his camera but we should receive some pictures soon, so keep your eyes peeled.

Last week we visited an Eco Sauna near Xela. It was more like a steam bath really but it was so hot and relaxing, it was great. On the weekend we visited a town called Huehuetenango (pronounced Way-way-tenango). They have a huge market there. A lot of fruit and veg, clothes and a lot of meat! I have never seen that many intestines lying around for offer. It was vile but I'm still very fond of meat and as you can imagine Ed too. They have a little Mayan ruin site near Huehuetenango called Zaculeu, which is not very impressive at all. It's very small and in the 1940's the United Fruit Company sponsored the excavation and restoration of the site and thought it was a great idea to recoat the buildings with concrete. Not great but still a nice trip for the weekend.

Saturday night we went out with a fellow irish man from Cork. Needless to say, Ed was pleased and we got drunk on Mojitos, 75 Quetzales a pitcher, that's less than 7 Euro...happy days. One last thing...Ed managed to get up at 4 am on Sunday to climb up Santa Maria,a volcano (dormant) near Xela. I couldn't face it and stayed in bed. Fair play to him and he ven managed to climb up the thing.

Well, that's all our shenanigans for the past 2 weeks. We'll try and update the blog more frequently and hopefully with a few more interesting stories.

Talk to you soon...Yvonne and Ed
