Everywhere you look around the lake you can see plantations up the volcanoes and hills - they utilize every inch of the land. In this picture is probably corn and coffee amongst other plants.
Hello Friends! Late last night brought our first jump into Lago de Atitlan - it was exhiliarating! Our nightly adventure started with Amy, Cole, Jenaye, and I, but then mom and dad joined the festivities. The water was warm and the rainy season had some storms in the background so we had a wonderful lightning show silhouetting the volcanoes as our backdrop. As with previous mornings the roosters did not fail and we were up before 6 this morning. Amy and I went for a run away from San Marcos La Laguna and found another village (Tzununa) which is probably about a 15 minute walk from Pasaj Cap. Tzununa was certainly less touristy than San Marcos, yet most people find San Marcos not very touristy compared to other towns around Lago de Atitlan. Tzununa was already vibrant at 6:15, it is evident that the way of life around here goes as the sun goes for all ages from toddlers to the elderly. We spent our day in San Pedro La Laguna, supposedly the hangout for many ex pats. There are boats that run around the lake and stop at the docks every 20 minutes - this turned out to be a

very easy way to get to San Pedro as opposed to the land route. San Pedro seemed so touristy compared to what we have experienced in San Marcos. Although it was touristy, it did not seem to be that busy and we enjoyed our time. For the most part we spent the day trying different foods and walking through town. We started with breakfast overlooking the lake - five of the six of us had a liquado (smoothie) - they were delicious! After some exploring the town and checking out shops we landed at cafe atitlan for some espresso, bruschetta, a beer, and to purchase some local coffee for at Pasaj Cap. At the cafe the espresso was free and delightful - I would recommend the cafe to other visitors. We meandered back towards the boat dock and stopped at Hummus-Ya for some Caipirinha's, Mojito's, and Hummus. Upon our boat trip back to the San Marcos we did a little shopping for dinner. We purchased four avocados that were the largest I have seen, and a pineapple - total cost was $2.50 for the avocados and pineapple. A relaxing night over the lake to conclude the evening...
