Si. Yes. I hear this all the time from my lovely travel companion. Alisa has picked up a very interesting accent when speaking English now. Also, when she talks to someone from Antigua who speaks Spanish, she speaks in a dialect of Spanish-English. Last night, we went to a gym near our house to rock climb. We went with the two Israeli boys- Adom and Alon from our house. There were probably 15 Guatemalans there. When they would try to instruct Alisa in her climbing, she would say si-yes-si. It is very funny. She blames it on talking to the Israeli boys in their accent.
We are having so much fun with our housemates. Meals with the family are highlights of my day. Edna and Vincent are the owners of the house, and at least one of them eats with us during every meal. They speak very slow Spanish to help us understand. Last night, Edna said that Alon looked like this girl from the United States that lived here a few months ago named Natalie. One day, she stroked my arm hair and said, ¨Oh pelitos rubios.¨ She is just a really funny person. The Israeli boys are really
Pacaya again
These are Alisa´s pictures... hopefully I can get some of mine up soon! fun too, and we have had several nights of just talking and laughing together. They are traveling for 10 months after completing three years in the military in Israel.
Other interesting events of the past few days.... Alisa and I climbed an active volcano on Sunday It´s name is Pacaya. It was such a cool experience. The hike was only 4KM, and we left at around 6AM so I thought it would be a pretty simple hike. It wasn´t. We hiked straight up the mountain it felt like, and then once we got to the crater where lava was flowing, it was so HOT! Seriously, standing on rock near the lava with my thick tennis shoes on, my feet were burning. They hurt so bad. It was really neat though, and there were so many beautiful views we saw. I am going to try to put some pictures on here.
Sunday night, we had dinner outside at the Central Park of Antigua. It was mother´s day in Guatemala, and there were a lot of families here. We just sat there eating and people watching for so long. It is crazy having so much free time! I love being
able to just sit. While we were there, a parade began from the Cathedral celebrating the virgin Mary. There was a lot of incense and a band playing. It took us awhile to figure out what was happening. Throughout Sunday, there was also fireworks going off all day even when we woke up at 530AM to leave for Pacaya.
Lessons started yesterday, and I love my teacher Odillia. I have already learned so much, and she is very encouraging. Also yesterday, Alisa and I stopped by La Casa de Cafe that is located between our school and house. It is a ministry of the YWAM base here, and we talked to some staff members about getting involved with some ministries here. I am very excited.
Well, I think that is enough for now. Sorry for all the rambling
With love, Steffi
