Trinidad is about 4 hrs drive from Havana on the South Coast of the Island, about half way across. We decided that as we didn't have that much time in Cuba, we'd divide the time up half-half between Havana and Trinidad rather than trying to rush around like I have been doing everywhere else on this trip.
We got to Trinidad on Saturday afternoon and checked into another casa. On Saturday we had some dinner in the casa and then headed out to some bars in town. Trinidad is a small colonial town with cobbled streets and, as with the rest of Cuba, has many bars with live bands and opportunities to dance. One bar is totally outside on some steps leading up from the main square and every night they had live bands and other performances and it would be packed with people dancing and lazing around.
Later that night we decided to go for a walk and Jon remembered reading about some nightclub which is in some caves hidden up a hill to the north of the town. After leading me up what seemed to be a rubbish dump, we reached some stairs and went into the
coolest club I´ve ever seen! Unfortunately I didnt have my camera, but it was a huge cave and they had built in a DJ booth and different rooms and it seemed like it was a secret place because it was so tucked away!
On Sunday we hired bikes to go to the beach in Playa Ancon. We ended up heading off around midday and unfortunately we got a bit burnt on the way (maybe one of us more than the other...😉). Jon then spent most of the rest of the day in the shade (bless!) and tutted at me lying in the sun for 6 hours!! We found a nice little spot on the way home: a restaurant by the sea where we watched the sun set and had another typical Cuban meal (ie. shrimps and lobster!) and then hurried back and did half of the journey in the dark as the sun was going down!
Monday we had booked to go on a Catamaran trip. It was a typical package tour trip, with plenty of people trying to make the most of the all-included drinks and some huge group of Turkish tourists. The island we arrived at
was very idyllic and we time to snorkel before our seafood lunch on the beach. In the afternoon, luckily we only had an hour or so to sunbathe before reboarding the boat but then had some fun trying to get the boat to move as it had run a ground on the coral reef! Luckily some men came to our rescue (Jon had already changed so had a good excuse) and got out to swim so that the catamaran would be lighter and could move.
We got back to Trinidad and decided to go for a salsa lesson. It was just us in the class and I think we did pretty well actually although the teacher was a bit of a joker and was particularly hard to follow as he kept mucking about when Jon wanted to copy the steps!
On Tuesday we had booked to go on a horse ride before heading back to Havana. The scenery was amazing and we stopped a couple of times: one to try some coffee at a house in the middle of nowhere where a lady grew her own coffee and again at a farm where they squeezed sugar canes to
get a sweet juice to keep us going for the rest of the trip. The final destination was a waterfall (which unfortunately had no water because of it being dry season) and we went for a swim and pretended we were canyoning all over again by jumping off the ledge into the pool. The journey back was just Jon and I (we were hoping to make a 3pm bus) and was equally as breathtaking as we crossed valleys and got views over to the beach that we had visited the previous day.
We ended up missing the bus unfortunately so shelled out on a cab to take us the 4 hours back to Havana. We got there to be snubbed by the posh hotel that we thought we had reserved so found ourselves a cheaper alternative round the corner and then went back to use their Wifi Internet service and their lobby bar for the rest of the evening!! For the rest of the Havana trip see my other entry!
