and we're off
Getting ready to leave for the airpost. Sunday 4/24
Left school at 11:15 for our adventure. Kids wide-eyed with anticipation, parents, misty-eyed with anticipation. Trip uneventful.
Left our B & B for a rainy morning drive through cloud forest - different from rain forest. Cloud forest is higher and it is just - clouds - mist - duh! Passed the confluence of 2 rivers - the yellow one from a volcano, full of sulpher; the other fresh water rain run-off.
We stopped for breakfast buffet, rice and beans (which is served at every meal) and quite delicious. Took the group photo for posterity. One of many.
Stopped at a Del Monte banana plant. But, the interesting part of the stop was the man lopping off the tops of young coconuts and inserting a straw. Yum. It took him two well-places hits. $1.00. Yum, Yum. The first creature we saw was a Hercules beetle. About 4 inches long. I could only imagine one in my bed.
We arrived at our two-day destination in surely the most humid place on Earth. (Maybe not, but it feels like it.)
The flowers we pay $10 a stem, they go out and cut them down. Beautiful.
Sniff, sniff
Parent saying goodby. We took a boat trip to see wildlife. and the first one we saw a crocodile. Beautiful flowers and really beautiful weather for about 2 hours on the water. Many nice birds but not for my camera.
At 3 PM we took the boat across the river to the town of Tortuguero. About 1000 people live in the area. It was Sunday and schools were closed. But, in place of windows they had lattice work which permitted us to see inside. Boy, I guess you don't need a lot to learn.
As we walked through the town, sweating, we saw a man getting his haricut. Turned the kids loose to explore on their own. Dogs everywhere, a little girl sitting outside a small pizza shop with her hands covered with pizza dough, young boys, making the best of nothing to play with. Wendy and Guy saw a little boy pulling a fishing line attached to a leaf - a leaf - as though he'd found the golden ticket!
The night ended at the pavilion with the kids having a beer - oops - I mean a soft drink. In bed at 8:30 PM for the early morning
two rivers
An unusual confluence of two very different rivers canal tour.
We went to bed sweating - AGAIN!
