Another view from our balcony
DD went out to dock to work on her artisitc picture taking. Monday, 12/29/08 -- Shopping on non-cruise ship day on Grand Cayman.
Typical day on Grand Cayman: Eat, go to pool; eat, go to beach; eat, go to hammock!
That was yesterday; a little variety today - we went shopping, which is another very popular activity here. We don’t do the high end duty-free shopping however.
Last night I forgot to include hammock time, which is one of my favorite times at this resort, even when it’s rather windy and chilly. Something about it is very enjoyable for me.
Today we had our usual pool and ray time in the morning after breakfast, then lunch and gathered up to go to downtown Georgetown. No cruise ships in today so it was very quiet and some shops were not open. Went to the bank (changed some pounds I had left over from my Europe trip and went to the ATM), then spent about 3 hours going into various shopping “malls” and souvenir stores. Had a “pattie” at one of the many tortuga rum shops - it’s a flat fried pastry with a meat filling - quite tasty ($1.50 CI each). Bought t-shirts (3 for $25.00 US) and DGS got

Local beer and t-shirt a pendant with some of his Santa money. We also went by the gov’t buildings and stopped in at the library (my camera went on the fritz, probably batteries again, so my shots of that area are messed up - moral - keep extra batteries on your person, not in the hotel room - same problem I had in Venice! You’d think I’d learn!).
We’ve been watching a huge yacht with its own helicopter in port the last few days; I finally went with a guess that it’s Paul Allen’s (one of the Microsoft guys) and DD checked online and that does appear to be a match. We did some camera window-shopping and one of the guys at Cathy Church’s said that was what they were also speculating - it’s an amazing looking small ship (huge yacht). The little underwater Vivitar camera I brought along is totally not working, so I’m looking into a replacement. Since we just surface snorkel, it’s not worth getting a serious underwater camera, except that it’s fun to have a record that we are swimming with fish. We may just rent one for a day.
We had a snack at Burger King (DGS

It's been here several days -- looks like the online photos of Paul Allen's. won’t eat a pattie) and then made a small grocery store run which may get us through the end of our stay here for this trip. It’s “Manager Party” tonight at the resort - a little “free” beer/wine and some appetizers, followed by a fire-eater and limbo show that DGS really enjoys, also a two-piece live band until 9:00 (DD wimped out before the limbo show). DGS and I had some hammock time while the music was still playing, and she baked some chocolate chip cookies (from a package of course - they were supposed to be Santa’s cookies!).
Mike the new general manager, did a brief talk and mentioned that the resort is now with Wyndham, but it’s still a little unclear. I asked and he said it’s official, but not all the paperwork is finalized, and that it won’t affect us “owners” at all. He also did a couple of question games, and I won two of them - when the resort opened and how old he is (they were both guesses; I had no previous info), so I won a Caybrew t-shirt and a 6-pack of beer - totally appropriate for me!
