Back to school! And never more excited to do so!
(Well that might be a lie, I'm always excited to go back to school.)
But today was wonderful! My teacher mentor Miss Gwen and I had finished setting up our lovely and colourful room the weekend before, and Friday the 2nd was the school's orientation day. We got to meet about half the students since the rest didn't come, but that was nice - to sort of ease into it. Really it was a waste of everyone's time though, since we had to restate expectations and redo introductions today for those who didn't come, even though we weren't technically allowed to allot time for it today. Ah well! A lot of teachers voiced their concerns, hopefully the administration will listen for next year.
But those little troubles had passed, and I was just so excited yesterday. I spent most of the day preparing the final touches on my lessons, figuring out how to have my lesson plans available without printing them, and filling in my teacher planner. I packed my backpack and went to bed early.
After a gorgeous sunrise run to get myself ready for a
new adventure, I went to school early to get the class set up and meet the students trying to fnd their classroom.
My class is great! We ended up with 30 students (15 boys, 15 girls), and they're all 8,9 and 10. I love their names! N'Gaii (Ne-jay), Isaida, Shanoy, Khya... Beautiful names. And beautiful kids! They're funny and smart, and even though I can tell a few are going to push my buttons, they're already winning my heart. Love em already.
I am going to be teaching Math, Science, Art, PE and running the library, journaling and spelling games sessions. The last three are part of the daily program called "Learning for Living" when the teacher can basically pick whatever they want to do. Today I just had Math and Library.
Library will be my both super fun and super challenging I think. I asked Miss Gwen if I could introduce this as a session because they didn't usually go to the library and I thought it was really important that they did. I am going to try to set up a reading evaluation to see their levels, to make sure they choose challenging books. I also am trying to instate this bookmark system to help keep the library organized. They take out a book, and leave their bookmark on the shelf to mark the spot while they browse. Then take the bookmark with them once they have chosen a book, or return the book to the marked spot to keep the books in order. Day 1 of bookmark system: mayhem. Most didn't use it and a handful left them in the shelves, haha. But we will keep working on it. Routines just take practice! My favourite part of library will be the read aloud half, when I am going to read the Magic Treehouse series to them! Fun times!
So. Day one was a major success. Looking forward to day two and more fun!
