I know the blog has been pretty quiet this week. Last Sunday I was getting things all organized to write about a wonderful rendez-vous with a friend from Keating (the lovely Sandra Perdeaux) in San Juan and I was getting the ship's address for you and I was going to post everything Monday. But then drama hit. Monday I was in ridiculous pain. Abdominal pain so bad I couldn't walk without pain. I stopped in the infirmary but the nurse didn't have any suggestions besides continue taking my ibuprofen and come see the doctor later that night. So I got off the ship in St. Thomas and started my scuba training. Terri, one of the social hosts, is doing the training with me. Our final port of call and southern-most stop was in Bridgetown, Barbados. An independent Caribbean island nation, Barbados gained it's independence from Britain but still retains much of it's British charm. This island is best known for it's white sandy beaches, rums, and for being a playground for the wealthy especially along it's western coast. Our excursion that we chose for the day was a coastal cruise in a five-star catamaran with the opportunity to swim and snorkel with sea turtles. Since our excursion didn't begin until 9:30, we took full advantage of the chance to sleep in this morning. Geo: 13.0935, -59.6105Mum & I went for 2 weeks - which was one week too long as there's only so much to see on a tropical island full of honeymooners. But we had a good time considering, went all over the island, went on boat trips, went snorkelling to see some cool fishies, went to Mount Gay rum brewery, being 400m from the equator I got pretty sunburnt (where I discovered from a local aloe vera as a cure), read 'Love in a time of Cholera' (by Gabriel Garcia Marquez) whose tropical setting was appropriate, ate a lot of swordfish (as had no choice), got my hair plaited (all of it), went to catholic mass where the visitors have to stand up an idenify them selves - a bit embarrassing, went shopping in Bridgetown where I ... read more
