After the storms had passed and we got all the work done on the boat in Marsh Harbor we decided to go on down to the Berry Islands. The first leg of the journey is to get to the southern tip of the Abacos, Little Harbor. We anchored there for a few days while waiting for the sea to lay down so that we would have a safe passage between the Abacos and the Berry Islands. We anchored right off the beach and were able to swim ashore from the boat- very cool! And the best part of spending time at Little Harbor was our visit to Pete’s Pub. Now this is an amazing story which has been written and published in the book Artist on his Island: A Study in Self-Reliance. Pete’s father, an artist ... read more

After leaving Great Guana Cay, we decide to go ahead and go into Marsh Harbor (the largest harbor in the Abacos with many marinas and shops). It is a relatively big city compared to the other island towns and has the only traffic light in the Abacos. We needed to re-fuel, re-provision, and load up for our next adventure out and we wanted to meet up with our friends on the Verna Breeze to plan our trip down to the Berry Islands. What started out as a 2-3 day marina stay quickly turned into a week because of bad weather. Actually- we have spent 2 of the last 3 weeks at the marina in Marsh Harbor because of storms with strong winds and lightening and rain. But we made use of our time in Marsh by ... read more

After waiting out the first storm to pass in Marsh Harbor we decided to continue with our trek down south and explore some more of the islands in the Sea of Abaco. Our destination was Elbow Cay, an island with good protected anchorages and a lot of great things to see and explore. After the three hour sail we find the perfect anchorage nestled between the southern end of Elbow Cay, the northern tip of Tilloo Cay, and protected from the west from Lubbers Quarter Cay. It almost had 360 degree protection (very rare to find here in the Bahamas unless you are in a big harbor) and proved to be a great spot to be for a few days, especially because the wind clocked around as the storms passed. After settling into our new spot ... read more

A weather window opened up for us to cross the Gulf Stream, so we were off to the Bahamas. We left around midnight on Tuesday so that we would hit the bank of the Bahamas at first daybreak and be able to continue to sail thru the day and anchor at Great Sale Cay that night. We crossed over with our friends, Chris and Kelly, who are on the sailing vessel Verna Breeze. It was a great crossing, with calm seas and light winds. We watched another beautiful sunrise, caught fish along the way, and you can certainly tell when you enter the banks because the water turns to crystal clear turquoise blue. We couldn’t have asked for a better crossing. Once we arrived at Great Sale Cay (an uninhabited island in the middle of the ... read more

As he entered the departure lounge, I thought the tall lanky man with the guitar case was a friend of mine. At least, he was as familiar as an acquaintance. Perhaps, it was his attire of khakis, loafers, a jeans dress shirt and a BoSox cap that fit an archetype so close to simpleton traveling types. Through his Ben Franklin spectacles and under the bill of his cap, I recognized him. I caught myself slightly smiling at him as he scanned the room and placed his guitar case on the ground. Two boys and two women followed him in, adding to the eight other passengers waiting on the flight. The boys were twins, both dressed in blue and white pinstripe shirts, and were no more than three years old. As for the ladies, one was a ... read more

Jan 23 Simply put, the three of us weren’t getting along or enjoying ourselves. I had offered to leave the boat, but reconsidered when M decided to do the same. After a week of stalling in Nassau, she reneged. That was this Monday morning. My travel instincts kicked into gear. There was no way I was going to continue for now under these circumstances. Determination swelled within me and my mind prioritized the necessary steps to be taken before leaving. 1) Find out when the mail boats are leaving for George Town. I walk down to Potter’s Cay, the wharf rat haunt under the Paradise Island bridges. Mail boats leave tonight @ 19:30, Tues @ 3 and Wed at @ 19:30. Possibilities. Check. 2) Let the Captain know I want to leave and find out how ... read more

Nassau Harbour We’ve come to the hub of the Bahamas: Nassau Harbour. It’s not a circular harbour in the traditional sense, but rather a strait or slender channel 200 yards wide. It’s bordered to the south by New Providence Island and the historic city itself, and to the north by Paradise Island. Marinas line either side of the channel, which are connected by two toll bridges with 80 feet of clearance. We decided to do what’s for free: anchor in the middle. It’s an oddly quiet and calm place to anchor, which must be why a dozen or so sailboats surround us. The only noises come from passing boats, a variety of which are represented here. Besides the yachts anchored nearby, one finds catamarans, smaller dinghies, local watercraft and docked fishing boats. To the west is ... read more
