Having been in Nassau with Katherine about six years ago, my memories were of an overcrowded Straw Market and a lackluster city tour, followed by a walk around the huge Atlantic Hotel complex. Wishing to repeat none of those, I booked Anna and I on a "beach break" trip to some place called Blue Lagoon. Upon docking, I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had completely redone the terminal area, and much of the seediness I'd remembered was gone. Nonetheless, we boarded a catamaran close to our ship, and they took us out of the marina, past the Atlantis and around Paradise Island, to the very small island which -- I guess -- is called Blue Lagoon. It was a nice ride out, and the weather was spectacular. They told us the hurricane had brought them a lot of wind and rain the day earlier, but aside from errant palm fronds laying about, there were few outward signs. We also were afforded close-up views of the dozens of mansions which line Paradise Island. Evidently they're primarily owned by Gulf Arabs, with the occasional recording and/or movie star mixed in.
The beach was exactly that for which we'd hoped. Anna's
only requirement had been a hammock between two palm trees, and that we had. We spent a very leisurely day rocking in the hammock, floating in the very calm lagoon, and playing in a small aqua park they had recently erected out in the water. I actually got a lot more use out of the park than Anna. She complained at one point of a rash on her arm, so we got out of the water, and sure enough, her left arm was sporting a nasty looking rash, which she said hurt. I consulted the first aid station attendant, who responded, "Oh, that would be the moonlight jellyfish sting, mon." He pulled out and applied some ointment, and in less than five minutes, the rash and itching was gone. No harm, no foul.
We took the boat back to town mid-afternoon, showered, and then entered Nassau proper for a little shopping. We had a few last souvenirs on our "to-buy" list, and finding shops near the pier was no trouble.
We had dinner in the Manhattan Room on our last evening, which is billed as a "New York Supper Club." Of all our meals, this was our favorite -- a combination of
service, food, and ambiance. They had a band playing during supper, and people were up dancing. We had to skip dessert, unfortunately (never fear...ice cream came later), as we decided to see Blue Man Group for a second time. We again secured second-row seats. I debated putting on the plastic raincoat, as we didn't get dirty the first time. Anna insisted we wear them and, as luck would have it, they were needed, as she took a full-force shot of pureed banana late in the show. Hard to explain...you have to see the show.
We spent our last hour or so up on deck, with our now obligatory ice cream.
