North America October 1st 2011

One of the best days. Awoke to phone call at 5am advising hot air balloon was cancelled due to wind. Devastation! Russell and Json 30 minuts late to the bus in Phoeenix, which meant they had to put on a Lady Gaga performance. Stopped off in Sedona red rock county) for a few hours. This is in Arizona, and the thing is here is that all buildings need to make a serious attempt at blending into landscape. Very low key. The Mcdonalds in Sedona has turquoise arches as yellow was deemed too abrasive. Very hot. Cruised round with Ben and co. Had lunch, shopping, just walked around. After lunch had a one and half hour jeep ride. Great tour guide. Bumpy ride. Amazing scenery. Photos at top and then back. Saw some pretender in his Porsche ... read more

Bus from San Diego to Phoenix. Somewhat hung over. Had three stops along the way and all of them were uber hot/. Like walking into an oven, but a very dry heat. At first stop I bought a 2L cup of diet Dr Pepper for $1.79. I drank it all, but it will be a very long time before I can face any cola products again. Got to Phoenix mid afternoon. Big mall next to our hotel so spent a couple of hours there looking for a dress. Couldn't find anything I liked at all. I'm so out of shape from no gym due to knee. Bought sunglasses - not my coverted Dior, but Ralph Lauren. Dressed and went out to pool for a pre dinner beverage. This is where I met the love of my ... read more

Pretty average breakfast. Juice tasted like a cup of diabetes. THis is before I met my good friend naked juice. Went to the zoo. Most of the group went to Sea World. Sea World is where water based animals are. Just in case you didn't know. I just took myself round the zoo. Started off at reptile house. Harry Potter has scarred me - I didn't look that well because I was afraid the windows would disappear or something. Lots of walking. Very hot. Half the zoo was birds, which was good, because I don't like birds so it took less time. Met Euplene (why do I get the feeling I've already posted about this?) at 2pm and went to catch a bus to go and see the ship (USS Midway aircraft carrier). What a failure. ... read more

Ok, so today was day one of Contiki. Traveled from LA to San Diego. Really foggy on the way there. I was sitting in a prime window seat but could see nothing. Apparently this is normal. Fog cleared late morning and it was a beautiful day. In the morning did a bus trip around central city and then went on a one hour harbour cruise. That was good - saw lots of ships and where the Navy SEALS train. This put a few things in perspective for me as I read a lot of books with navy/military themes. Lunch at a mall. I wasn't impressed with the shops - not my style at all. I'm struggling to buy stuff so far! What I liked was the pop up Halloween shops! Full of costumes and accessories, etc. ... read more

After I woke from my 15 hour sleep on the most amazing hotel bed ever, had breakfast and ventured to train stations to get to Buena Park. Unsure if I missed the train or if the train even existed in the first place, but it didn't happen. Then the second train didn't happen. Instead of my intended 9.40am departure, I didn't leave until 11.10am and it wasn't even to the right station. Then caught three (but really two) buses, got impatient, and walked ~30 mins to Knott's Berry Farm. Somewhat panicked by this point because was unsure if 4 hours would be enough to do all the rides. It was more than enough! There were hardly any people there and absolutely no queuing for rides! Sooo many thrill rides, it was great. Best one was the ... read more

Uneventful trip to Auckland -->LAX. LAX customs is surprisingly inefficient. I assume I'm now in the CIA database. Now what I didn't know is that LAX don't do duty free for incoming passengers - duty free is for departures only. You can still buy stuff at a shop, but they will tax you. Speaking of tax, unsure why the US don't implement something like GST. You have a price, and then there is tax on top of that. I"m not sure why that is. Very tired. Just went into Downtown LA to look for a supermarket/somewhere to buy fresh food. No luck, but I did walk home from the shops because in Mitch Hedburg's words: "Anywhere is walking distance if you have the time". Now when the hotel lady said it's not walkable, I assumed she ... read more
