We live in Germany at the moment. World traveling, for us, started in 1994. Until then we loved 4x4-ing in South Africa(where we are from), Namibia and Botswana. The time has come for us to return to Africa and we are getting ready to embark on a 6 months overland trip from Germany to Namibia in 2011. I'm new to blogging, liked your site - there is a no-nonsense feel to it and I thought this might be a good place to start to exercise my blogging skills, post pictures, work with maps, etc but mostly learn from other travel bloggers.

“On a thread” 14 August 2010 Saturday We are in the Hotel Drott, Norköpping. We were slow to rise, but the noise of the outside traffic finally pulled us out of bed. We (by we, I mean Willie and I and often our 2 boys) have traveled the world far and wide, 4x4’ed in Africa, pulled motorhomes around in America, camped all over Europe, stayed in ski-huts, tents, bed and breakfasts, our car...We are serious budget-travelers and with that serious hostelers - we have, or rather my husband, Willie, has refined it to an art. It is not even “on a shoestring” - it is “on a thread”. Why am I telling you this? Because we did the same on our Scandinavia trip with an old bit of difference? Our travel partners were both 76 - used ... read more

13th August 2010 Uppsala 71 km north of Copenhagen is the city of Uppsala: known for it’s Cathedral, Castle and University. The hour drive in the car gave Oom Gerrit and Mamma a well-needed rest and time for me to somehow recover from my lost-wallet-ordeal. Activity in old town was dwindling down as locals were locking their stores. We strolled around and discovered that we had an hour to visit the Cathedral(Domkyrka), the biggest cathedral in Scandinavia, dating back from the 13th century: - an impressive red-stone, twin-spire Gothic building. As we walked into the church we were greeted by an unexpected, impressive Gothic interior, allowing in much light so that we were accompanied by a golden glow as we visited the little bordering chapels and explored the rich history. We had a cup of coffee ... read more

Friday, 13 August 2010 We were on the early flight from Berlin to Skavsta airport in Sweden. 4 of us up at 4; in the taxi 4:30 at Schönfeld Airport 5:15 - 2+ hours before our flight. We heard that Ryan Air had strict baggage weight policies, and previewing the weight misery of some of the passengers before us in line, did not look promising. So we were anxious when we handed our 2 bags to be checked at the counter. Big, beautiful brown eyes dropped the verdict,“16,5 kg, sir. I’m sorry but you are allowed 15 kg for check-in luggage” Willie, like a cocked fire-arm, exploded into action: he hauled the bag off the belt, opened it, pulled out his Namibian leather “vellies”, handed it to my mom and placed the bag back on the ... read more

Seasoned Scandinavia My 76 year old mom and her husband, from South Africa, came to visit us in Kandern, Germany summer 2010. We feel "honored" that we were instrumental in helping a life time dream come true: visit the Scandinavian countries. 13 Augustus 2010... read more
