We had a rude awaking at 5 o'clock in the morning by an unholy clanging below the house! It was still dark. What was going on? We stumbled out of bed to see a herd of cows being driven along the road with bells on their necks and lights on their heads. We've seen the bells before but never lights. Whether these were set amongst garlands of flowers as we've seen before or tied onto their horns, I have no idea. I was too groggy to get my camera working in time to capture the sight. These are the scenes that make rural Switzerland special and interesting. Farming here is so different from home where everything is done intensively. Here, charm still exists. We had a domestic morning. First, we had to find somewhere to get ... read more

Our apartment owner's grandson turned up this morning to fix the internet. Yes, he did know what he was doing and yes the router was kaput. He took it away and added another network to the owners main network. What a nice young man he was too. He had spent time in NZ learning English and working on a property near Mt Maunganui. He and his girlfriend are coming to NZ in December for a few weeks so he's been invited to park his camper at our place if he wishes if passing through New Plymouth. After filling in the morning planning our next few days for hiking on not too difficult trails we drove down to Saanen and parked near the Bahnhof. It is a hot day with temperatures of 28 degrees so we figured ... read more

We had a day of problems but got off to a good start with Marc taking us to Kontanz to pick up our rental car. It is VW Golf, automatic, has a GPS and is a good size. The GPS was odd to operate and when we put in an address we headed off towards St Gallen. Wrong. So, we put in Saanen and headed off towards Zurich. Correct. We had a lunch stop at a huge Movenpick outfit which straddles the motorway where my 1E coin wouldn't work for the toilets - of course. The Indian lady finally let me in after some gabble between us. The scenery along the way is low lying, rolling hills with a lot of forest cover. More forest than we see at home I might add. The towns and ... read more

After a very good sleep we feel we are now into the new zone in the north - thanks to "No-More-Jetlag". I'm not sure how these wee tablets work but since using them over the last few trips we don't seem to get affected by Jet Lag. Since our first day in Gstaad will be late Saturday we were best to buy groceries today since shops are not open on Sunday. We are in the part of Switzerland where Germany juts into Switzerland so it is easy to drive over the Rhine into Germany to do shopping. We went to the Aldi Supermarket which was amazingly cheap compared to Switzerland and New Zealand prices. For example, I bought a lipstick, nail polish, foundation and perfume for 26E - some very girly stuff but why wouldn't you ... read more

We took the long haul from Auckland with no stopover on Emirates Airlines A380 from Auckland/Dubai/Zurich. Amazingly, we were wandering through Dubai Airport and someone called out my name. It was Heather and Doug from New Plymouth on their way to Sweden! Apart from that the trip was the usual - endure the trip and get it over and done with. One point of note is that Dubai had a population of 30,000 in the 1930's and now has 4 million. That is some growth!! Not for this Kiwi though - very modern, very busy, very hot and very sandy. On the Dubai to Zurich stretch we flew over Iran which showed some spectacular geology with outstanding examples of layered and folded rocks in the landforms. From flying height you could virtually see that the land had ... read more

Today is the last day of our holiday and we spent it on our feet - true to the TTATs philosophy! After another rather large breakfast, enough to sustain us all day, we set off along the coastal trail not far from our accomodation. The trail runs along the shore towards the city and looks across the Strait to Mt Olympus in the US. It eventually goes to the Overseas Terminus for Tourist Ships and one huge ship had just docked spewing out large numbers of people onto tours, buses or local shops. I am so happy I'm not one of the sardines - so far. Our trail took us to the Fishermans Wharf which we had not expected having not done our homework. It is at the Marina and has a number of colourful floating ... read more

After a good night's sleep in our high rise bed (we almost needed a ladder to get into it) our day started with a four course breakfast at the Victoria B&B. It is well known for it's breakfasts and the Victorian house and rooms. Needless to say there was more than we needed for the breakfast so our lady gave us a bag to put in any excess food which we did - true to our TTATs philosophy. We shared breakfast with four Ozzies three of whom were immigrants which made them interesting. The man ( a real Ozzie bloke) was married to a Mauritius woman who was born in Australia. She had her Mum and Aunty with her and they were originally from Mauritius. How much do we know about Mauritius? Practically nothing. English is ... read more

Today was mostly a travel day from Ucluelet to Victoria. After yet another sumptuous breakfast and a farewell to the owner of one of the best Guest Inns ever, we set off for the approximately 4 to 5 hours to Victoria. It is mostly a slow drive as the road on the western side of the mountains is fairly awful with slumping or broken tarmac in many places. Gradually the road is being upgraded in the most mountainous area but the coastal area needs a lot of work done to the road to match the eastern side. Until we reached the coast the scenery was mostly mountains, forests and lakes with any views to be had often blocked by trees. This country has enough trees to build houses for everyone in the world. Linds found the ... read more

Oh my, what a beautiful breakfast we had delivered this morning. A glass of grapefruit juice; a parfait of chopped fresh strawberries, yoghurt, a rim of fresh blackberries topped with a strawberry; a poached egg with greens and a little tomatoe followed by an orange and pecan warm muffin - all creatively presented on a tray. This lady knows hospitality and presentation. We then continued the Wild Pacific Trail along from where we were yesterday to the 6.5km mark. This trail is appropriately named as the coast is indeed wild. The headlands and bays are solid jagged rocks with waves surging and crashing with the ebb and flow. It is well paved and signposted and in many places they have little viewing platforms to stand on the edge of the cliffs or rocks to view out. ... read more

We were up early for our taxi to the 8.30 ferry across the strait to Little River in the Comox Valley area on Vancouver Island. We had breakfast on the ferry crossing on a dead flat sea from one port to the other. At Little River we had another taxi pick us up from the ferry and take us to the Comox airport to pick up our rental car. We found an unexpected large Airforce Base and Airport. I thought it would be tiny like the Powell River Airport. This one services the Island as well as going to Calgary and Edmonton. After picking up our Hyundai Accent (fairly small) we drove through the towns of Comox and Courtenay to get a feel for the area. What we found were large modern towns, lovely suburbs and ... read more
