I can't wait for Part 2 ! Seriously Brian, I have enjoyed following your amazing journey and your photography skills have improved along the way..... Look forward to catching up and hearing more stories.
Thanks for the entertaining travelogue Hello Brian. I met James last week here in New York, while he was visiting his daughter and her family. I had read a few of his emails that he sent while you were traveling through China and Russia and Africa. Thankfully, he also pointed me to your blog address, and I can only say Thanks for the great commentary. You have a wonderful sense of humor (something I would be sorely lacking under similar circumstances), and manage to convey both the sense of adventure as well as the moments of sheer insanity. Best regards, and great good luck in your travels. ..Mike from New York

I will never fear a Vet Inspection again Thanks for your words. Hope the Icelandic ash does not block London bound flights. We leave Africa on June 5th!

Botswana Thanks for your kind words Mike. Would really love to catch up but I have no idea what is lined up for me by my sisters. I promise if I get out of Dublin I will come your way. Please follow the blog.
Good to hear from you. Glad to hear that you are both doing well on your great adventure! Sounds quite scary to me (Val).
Hope the next portion of your journey goes well.
Best Wishes ...Val and Rob
Moscow Traffic Hi Brian, check out the taxis in Moscow, years ago when I was on business trips there, they were all rusting Ladas. One taxi I was in mounted the pavement because of the slow moving traffic to squeeze past, then hurtled round the corner onto a version of a zebra crossing, which are ridiculously placed so close to the corner that they are more off a risk than crossing the street halfway up. Will I see you in Ireland for Golf, Steak and Red Wine in no particular order? Be safe Mike
Hi from Oz Great to keep up with your amazing adventure via the blog. Laughed at your description of eating unidentifiable stuff. Sent Graeme to supermarket for food on first day in Japan and he served us up glasses of oil instead of apple juice for breakfast. We all got a good drenching on Day 1. No doubt a deliberate ploy to avoid any future shopping trips. Keep up the great descriptions of large, hairy Russians....Love Jackie and Graeme
I hear that there are plenty of turnips in the fields beside the train (pers cor Polish refugee during the war) so at a pinch you can make a nutritious soup!
Always leave 20 roubles in wallet for casket.
Advice here is free of charges.

Hi Brian, Just got your latest blog. Love reading them but don't always have access to laptop. You are having great fun!!!! Have had an absolutely wonderful time in Sydney. Off to Shanghai on Tuesday and then home next Saturday. We will write more then. Love, Winnie
what no vias??! Hey Super CC,
Sorry not got back sooner but the Pilbara took it's toll and I have only just managed to get the orange earth from my feet (it took several pedicures and a jet wash). Trip good got several cc's but none with the humour and good grace of your good self.
You should re-name your trip 'Carry on Bartering' -they will be reeling and saying 'Infamy, Infamy he got it in for me!" LOL
The trip sounds amazing and James as I pictured it is doing his best (and succeeding) in becoming the most proficient discounter of the century-good man!!
Sound like all is going well and hope the old legs lasted on the bikes (James's not yours!)
Keep well, try to conserve your food in foil wrappers and once more into the breach-Carpe Diem:)

Bucket list trip. This is an account of a trip across China and Russia, with a brief visit to the UK, volunteer vet work in Botswana, a trip to Dublin and back to Perth.
My travelling companion, for those that do not know him, is none other than my friend and colleague Dr James Forbes, 73, originally from Aberdeen and an equine veterinarian with a mind like a steel trap. James is in charge of the purse strings and being a teetotaller thinks that alcohol just gives you expensive urine. My urine will get very expensive if there is a dutyfree at the Sino-Soviet train border.
