Day 18 Photos of our adventures Dreading flying with U.S. Air today. We did not have a good start to our trip thanks to them. We are skeptical at best about what today will bring. Update: No. We’re not home yet. We are still in Philadelphia and have been for the past 4 and ½ hours. When we arrived, our plane was supposedly on time. We made it through customs and a security line that took an hour and a half. We were sent to gate C26 and then to gate A26…which is where we found out (after rushing like mad people) that our plane was delayed by 2+ hours. By the time we get home we will have been traveling for over 24 hours again thanks to this shitty airline. We aren’t bitter. We ... read more

Day 17 Yes. We slept through breakfast. At least we’re consistent. We got up in enough time to take bus the bus in to town (no walking for us, baby!) and do a little shopping. I have to hand it to Michael. He was quite the trooper. After all was said and done, I only ended up getting one shirt. Oh well! It was fun to look. Off to lunch we went and then on to more shopping. We weren’t putting forth our usual amount of effort in hoofing it from place to place, but the heat and the last few days events seemed to have us pretty zapped. So…you guessed it…back to the room we went for a nap until dinner time. Dinner was good. The highlight—a fruit salad that we split as our ... read more

Day 16 Photos of our adventures After getting less than 5 hours of sleep, we rolled out of bed for our next journey, Rome. This time, not only was the train on time, it was actually early. At least our day was off to a positive start.  Neither of us were very happy though. I think after two strenuous days of physical activity, the last thing that we wanted to do was to walk around the streets of Rome. The fact that it was supposed to be 90 degrees that day was not helping to improve our morale any either. We decided to start off our adventures at the coliseum. The structure was impressive. We went with a guide who helped to dispel many of the myths that the movie The Gladiator had put ... read more

Day 15 Photos from our adventures Today was to be an early day. We got up at 5:45 so that we could make our train in to Cinque Terre. It was to be two hours before we would arrive at our destination. Michael mapped out our day yesterday. We had walked 5 miles. Today quite possibly equaled that—Only it was 5 miles up hills and stairs and winding seaside paths. It was nutty. We were sweaty and nasty by the end of this 18 hour adventure…but check out the pictures from our day. It was incredibly beautiful. Dinner was seaside by one of their local “beaches.” Michael got some great footage of the waves crashing up over the rocks as we ate. Dessert was a little bit of everything…and well deserved after our all day ... read more

Day 14 Photos from our adventures Today we actually got up at a reasonable time. We were on a mission. We needed to secure our train tickets for the next two day’s adventures. We had to first figure out how to navigate the bus system in order to get to the train station. Unlike the U.S. and the other three countries we had visited, you could easily buy a ticket for the bus on the bus. For some reason in Italy, we just couldn’t figure it out. There were machines, but it didn’t take money. Some people got on and ran tickets through the machine, some just got on the bus and had a seat. What was the deal? I was a little panicked. As we sat on the bus, there was a screen that ... read more

Day 13 After getting our normal overindulgence of sleep, we rose in time to see what Italy had to offer for lunch and to drop off a bunch of laundry at a local shop that would wash and dry it for us. (Isn’t it nice to be on vacation?) We had planned on today being a casual, get acquainted with the city, kind of day. It’s a good thing that we made our way back to our hotel after lunch and a stroll or we would have missed our reservations (that Michael made a month in advance) for a tour of the Ufizzi Gallery. Thank goodness it was only a quick little walk from our hotel. This museum was soooo much better than the Chagall Museum that we had been to only days ago. There ... read more

Day 12 - Bon journo Italy! Photos of our adventures We arrived at our hotel at 7:30 in the morning. Apparently that was too early to check in. I must say, the man behind the desk wasn’t even the least bit sympathetic to our plight. He wasn’t even trying to work with us. So we decided to leave our luggage at the hotel and walk around the city for as long as we could. We were exhausted and we didn’t particularly care much where we were walking. We just knew that we needed to keep walking or we’d fall asleep. There didn’t seem to be too many places open at that early hour. I must say, first impression of Italy—not a real good one. The place is pretty dirty. It looks like people just throw ... read more

Day 10 (6/30) - The Day of Badness Photos from our adventures Today was moving day. Since we extended our stay in Nice, we needed a room for an extra day. Our hotel, unfortunately, did not have a room for us so we needed to change hotels for our final night. We decided to get up early (meaning before noon) so that we could check out on time. Since check in wasn’t until 1 at our new hotel, we actually went in search of breakfast. At 1 we got more than a ride to our new hotel. We got severely ripped off by our taxi driver. We had our hotel call us a taxi, climbed in to the beautiful Citroen, and took the 5 minute drive to our new hotel. The lady driver chatted us ... read more

Day 9 (6/29) url="http://picasaweb.google.com/kosmatka/NiceFranceCoteDAzureDay4Chagall?authkey=Hh27c0jHThI" target="_blank"Photos from our adventures By now you may have discovered, that we have become experts in the art of sleeping in. It is both a relaxing feature of our trip and has enabled us to save money by not eating breakfast. ;-) However, if I had only known how unfortunate today’s lunch would have been, I think I would have continued to sleep until dinner time. After eating the most fantastic pizza yesterday, I decided that today would officially be declared “day of the pizza.” I would make the sacrifice of eating pizza for both lunch and dinner. (Don’t you wish all sacrifices were this difficult?) Since the pizza yesterday proved to be too big for one person, Michael decided he would split the pizza and a salad with me. I ... read more

Day 8 (6/28) For some reason we don't have photos today. Check back again ... Since bedtime wasn’t until after 3, waking time wasn’t until after 11. It was another lazy, slow start to our day. By the time we actually rolled out of our hotel it was already after 1. Lunch was high on our list of priorities. We had an over-the-top lunch at one of the local places. They started us off with a plate of assorted olives and two small samples of pizza. I got a pizza that was bigger than my face and Michael got a ham sandwich and a beer. To add insult on to our stuffed injury, he than ordered us a lemon and sugar crepe. Thank goodness all we had planned for the day was to roll ourselves ... read more
