"James Mercer - Journey Through the Past" My Antarctica trip started with a long bus journey from Puerto Natales all the way down to Ushuaia. The boarder crossing from Chile into Argentina was a breeze with only a quick 20 minute delay. The Land Of Fire is an archipelago off the southernmost tip of the South American mainland, across the Strait of Magellan. The archipelago consists of a main island Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego divided between Chile and Argentina with an area of 48,100 km2 (18,572 sq mi), and a group of smaller islands including Cape Horn. The fairy trip from the mainland to Tierra Del Fuego is quick and if you have a keen eye you may spot some dolphins jumping around the fairy trying to get a glimps of the people! "Cafe Del Mar - Volume 15" When I was on the Navimag cruise we would have daily lectures about various things. One lecture was about Torres Del Paine and what to expect. They would describe the hikes and where they would lead you. The Torres, they said, is your prize after a moderately difficult hike. I would disagree with that statement. Rather, I would say the Torres is more of a gift. No amount of pictures could give their beauty justice. You have to see them for yourself. Surely there could not be anything more impressive in the park. If you start your hike with the Torres, you couldn't imagine anything more beautiful and awe-inspiring. Just wait, you have only just begun your hike of the legendary W trek at Torres Del Paine National Park! Before ... read more

"The Yeasayer - 2080" "The Doves - Last Broadcast" "Modest Mouse - Trailer Trash" At ten am on the second day of my hike at the famous, Torres Del Paine I found myself on a boat back home to my hostel. There were not many others on the boat with me! A girl from the United States with a sprained ankle, a man from Israel with a blown knee and a handful of others that had taken on the Torres and are now heading home defeated. As for myself, a knee injury! DAMN you Torres Del Paine!!! I arrived late to Puerto Natales thanks to my near Navimag disaster! I was greeted at the Tin House Patagonia Hostel by Pato, Laura and David. Those three would represent my Patagonian family while I volunteer at their hostel ... read more

"Digital Analog Band - I Promise" "Ypey - Somewhere Else" Finally found the time to write about my trip from Santiago to Puerto Montt! It was a relatively quick trip. I left Santiago on the 21st of January and I had to arrive in Puerto Montt by the 28th of January to catch my boat of doom to Puerto Natales deep in the Patagonia! I had spent two weeks in Santiago and it was certainly time to head out! Ximena, my Couch Surfing Host suggested we take a trip to Concepcion, where she is from. She said we could stay at her parents and take a few day trips around the city. She would have to return to Santiago for monday and from there I would head to Puerto Varas. Puerto Varas is a small lake ... read more

"Substructure - Firewire" I am yet to write about my trip from Santiago down to Puerto Montt. BUT I really want to tell my Navimag story while it is still fresh in my mind! This was a boat ride NO ONE on board will ever forget! Sweet baby jesus! I arrived in Puerto Varas a few days before my Navimag ferry was set to depart from Puerto Montt. The departure date was set for 2pm on January 28th. I decided to spend the night in Puerto Varas instead. It is a nicer place to stay then Puerto Montt. Sorry Puerto Montt locals! I had read quite a few reviews about the Navimag. Surprisingly there was a fair amount of negative reviews so I was a little nervous about the trip. Clearly those people who wrote anything ... read more

"Phosphoresent - Wolves" "Doves - Kingdom of Rust" I have much to write about! It would seem that I have fallen behind in my blogs! So I will break the week or so down into a couple blogs. This blog will be about a couple awesome day trips I went on! My last day in Santiago before heading down to Concepcion was spent at Vina Aquitania Winery! I wanted to go to Concha Y Toro but a few Couch Surfing friends suggested Aquitania instead. They said it is a more personal and intimate tour because it is a very small vineyard. So, I listened and booked my tour! I have become a master of the Santiago Subway system, so getting to the southern edge of the city was easy. I then had to grab a taxi ... read more

"Craig Cardiff - Everything has its time" Friday, January 14th and I have now been in Santiago for the better part of a week. I am growing anxious and I need to move about! So I decided to go online to my couch-surfing website and ask about camping in the Santiago region. Sure enough, I got a response within a few minutes. A local Chilean living in Santiago has lots of advice for me. I ask if he wants to join me, but he cant. Something about camping with another dude I am sure! However, he sent me some websites to look up. So I looked at a couple and decide on Cascada De las Animas. My current CS host, Ximena, agrees that it is a great place to go. She helped me figure out how ... read more

"Cafe Del Mar - Volume One" What have I learned about Chile thus far? Well I have not been here for very long, only a couple weeks. But I have certainly gained a perspective. Let´s face the reality here...I'm a privileged white dude from upper middle class Canada. So I am well aware that my perspective may tend to be biased or perhaps even coerced. I belong to a certain rooster coupe (to borrow a thought from The White Tiger) and by its very nature continues to bound me. By this I mean, as educated and free thinking as I would like to think I am, I still remain inherently ignorant. So I know my perspective may be flawed; however, I still wish to express it. My first step was making the trip to Chile. Upon ... read more

"cat power - free" "the national - green gloves" "chad vangaalen - red hot drops" Andrew and I made our way from Maintencillo, a small beach town north of Vina del mar and headed back to Valparaiso were we caught a night bus to Santiago. We arrived in Santiago at 1am and searched for a hostel to stay at. By 2am we had found one and quickly grabbed some rest. We had an 8am bus to Pucon, wich would take us 12 hours to travel. Like two zombies we finally arrived in Pucon around 10pm, the bus was not on time. Such is life in Chile, not on time! And I love that, no strict schedules, rushing from A to B like a mad man. Nope, casual and cavalier, take your time and remain relaxed! Pucon ... read more

"band of horses - Great salt lake" "the doves - kingdom of rust" NewYears Eve in Valparaiso has given me a whole new outlook on how one should bring in the new year. The party here was insane! I was quite excited to arrive in Valparaiso. I had learned that it was a UNESCO World Heritage City and I had seen plenty of pictures on google. Apparently those google pictures do aboslutely nothing to capture how unique, awesome and dirty this city is. My first impression of Valpo was amazing. Driving through the subtropical foothills of the Andes with rolling vineyards had raised my expectations. I was pumped and could hardly wait to get my first glimps of the city. And then we arrived. The first thing I saw was an uber amount of homeless dogs, ... read more
