I'm an English Teacher because I like to travel very slowly. I enjoy spending a lot of time in a country and getting to know it, sometimes I end up hating the country but I usually miss it once I've gone.

Muddy faced children stood half naked above the road looking down on us lined along the side of the road. Pigs ran around grunting at each morsel they stuck their nose into. The children watched, without expression, without comment on the proceedings below. A crowd gathered to watch us with blank expressionless faces. Then came squeal of the Korean made beige mini bus as it raced up the hill and into the thick sticky mud, the wheels spun again sending thick brown mess flying. The crowd waited in silence, holding their breath, watching. The wheels spun and then spun and then nothing. The driver cut the engine and shot back down the hill in reverse. We all sighed waiting for him to launch into another failed attack on this mountainside that has held us captive three ... read more

Bike Ride from Hanoi From Hanoi you head South on Highway 1 for a boring couple of hours, once past Phu Ly the mountains come into view in the west and the highway goes down to one lane each way. About 5km North of Ninh Binh you need to take a right hand turn signposted to Nho Quan. Follow this road for about 8km until you see a left hand turn signposted to Nho Quan and take this. Once in Nho Quan follow the main road through the town, before you leave the town there will be a huge blue sign on the left to Cuc Phoung, follow this! It is now about 20km to the park entrance. Staying at the Park We paid 220,000 dong for the park entrance and to stay one night in ... read more

Arrival Getting here is a challenge in itself, the nearest train stations are Mineralnye Vody and Nevinnomyssk which are a 4 hour and 3.5 hour drive respectively. Once at the train station you can start bartering for the cost of the taxi fare to Dombay, if you're lucky there will be some other people on your train going in the same direction and you'll be able to share the cost. Or you may be even luckier and meet an Armenian driver who went to English school, Victor's English wasn't great but with our Russian and his English we had a good chat for the four drive. We agreed on 3000R for the drive eventually but expect to pay 3,500R, Victor started by charging us 4,000R. We chose to go to Mineralnye Vody because from our research ... read more

Parque Nacional Cueva de los Guácharos This park is in the South of Huila and covers 9,000 hectares of mountainous rain forest. The park is full of caves and canyons. The highest point of the park is 2,800m and so the park covers all climatic zones up to páramo. The forests namesake inhabitants are the oilbirds whose huge wingspan is 91cm. They are nocturnal birds who feed on oil palm and they can travel several hours each night to eat. During the day they live in caves clinging to small rocky ledges with their next to useless feet. The oilbird is also notable for being one of the few birds to use echolocation. The park is well off the tourist trail and is quite difficult to reach. Visitors are rewarded though by a rich selection of ... read more
